England's preparations were disrupted by Hurricane Matthew, with the players confined to their hotel and forced to train on the beach but Jamaica escaped the worst ravages of the storm.

However, Haiti was not so lucky with nearly 900 people killed.

Hurricane Matthew has now reached the United States coastline with Florida and Georgia being battered, although it has been downgraded to a Category Two storm, with sustained wind speed dropping to 110mph (177km/h).

England will be wanting to get a bit of momentum because once you've got momentum, it's hard for the team on the other side of that. They want to make the West Indies aware they're in for a big challenge.

It looks like the wicket will deteriorate as the day goes on and it's more likely that spinners will get the benefit in the second innings. England have got it right by choosing to bat first.

Lydia had a welcome duty earlier today - presenting Sophie Ecclestone with her ODI cap to mark her debut in this format.

A warm welcome to Test Match Special to the BBC Radio 5 live sports extra airwaves.

An early warning: if you're listening via your wireless, it will switch to rugby league from 17:30 BST, while commentary will continue online - here, in other words - for the duration of the Grand Final, then resume on 5LSX from about 20:00.

  11. How the series workspublished at 15:14 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

So, why do you hear us talk about the first two matches (at the Trelawny Stadium) separately from the final three (at Sabina Park in Kingston).

Well, while the first two are proper, honest-to-goodness ODIs, the final three also count towards the ICC Women's Championship which determines qualification for next summer's World Cup in England.

Now, if England were to win the final three games 3-0, they would join Australia in clinching a top-four place in the table which guarantees their participation next summer. This is because many of the teams around them still have to play each other.

  12. England team newspublished at 15:09 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

And here's the team. With no Shrubsole, England go into the match with three front-line spinners (Laura Marsh, Sophie Ecclestone, Alex Hartley) plus further spinning options in Heather Knight and Danielle Wyatt.

Katherine Brunt will be the main seam threat - backed up by Natalie Sciver and Georgia Elwiss. In other words, anyone except wicketkeeper Amy Jones and openers Tammy Beaumont and Lauren Winfield could well turn their arm over.

One big blow for England in these first two matches will be the absence of vice-captain and pace bowler Anya Shrubsole - who misses out with a side strain which she suffered in a practice match on Thursday.

Afternoon, everyone. The English summer may be over... but it's always summer in the West Indies, right?

England's women are out in Jamaica for a five-match one-day international series, which could see either side take a large step towards qualification for next summer's World Cup. But more of that in a minute...
