Summary

  • Debutant Mehedi, 18, takes five wickets

  • Moeen top-scorer with 68 off 170 balls

  • Bairstow makes battling half-century

  • Pitch turns sharply on day one

  1. Eng 56-3published at 22 overs

Mehedi's first spell in Test cricket comes to an end. Not a bad start from the young un, who bowled 10 overs and took 2-13. There is no respite for England from the spin, though, as Taijul Islam brings some left-arm off-spin to proceedings. He starts with a maiden.

Phil Dodsworth: Every Yorkshire fan could have told you Ballance has been out of form for far too long, Hameed should have opened, Duckett at four.

  3. Eng 56-3 (Kamrul 4-0-19-0)published at 21 overs

Ever-reactive to the glare of a camera, the home crowd are out of their seats and bouncing around. They've got plenty to cheer as well. Their side are well on top. This is a better over from Kamrul Islam Rabbi, who finds good line to keep England to two singles.

  4. Eng 54-3published at 20 overs

No rest for Mehedi, who remains economical but is handled well by Moeen. These two are doing a decent job of rebuilding the innings. But on a turner like this there is no room to relax.

What I'm hoping today is that England are pro-active with changing the batting order, moving Bairstow up. You need to break it up with left and right handers and also that they are pro-active with moving their feet and getting that momentum.

  6. Eng 53-3 (Root 26, Moeen 5)published at 19 overs

Slip, gully and short-leg in for Kamrul, who continues despite his loose last over. Moeen opens up for the first time, latching on to a full ball to drive through cover. Classic Ali.

He misjudges the penultimate ball, though, ducking and turning his head to a short ball that doesn't bounce and is a few centimeters away from clocking him in the temple.

Mehedi has the makings of the perfect spinner, he gets side-on and through his action, but the key for me is the revs on the ball. England have got some work to do.

  9. Eng 47-3 (Mehedi 9-2-12-2)published at 18 overs

Mehedi restores order for Bangladesh with another tight over. Root plays with authority, Moeen looks very uncertain. The latter offers a tentative poke at the last ball, which spins past his bat. It is not easy as a left-hander in this situation.

We're set up for a brilliant Test match. I'm not sure how far into the five days it will go.

Chris, Kingston Upon Hull: Should have opened with Hameed - consensus was pretty well established beforehand.

  12. Eng 45-3 (Moeen 1, Root 24)published at 17 overs

Ooooh, England have just got away with one. Had Bangladesh reviewed that Moeen lbw he would have been out. It pitched in line and would have clocked leg stump. The home side keep England guessing by returning to the slingy seam of Kamrul. It is a mistake. Root fills his boots, flicking one off his legs for four before driving beautifully through cover for another. Root, as is so often the case, is making this look easy while everyone else struggles.

Si Lomas: First thoughts on this pitch are it could be a 2 and a half day Test match, absolute bunsen burner.

  14. Eng 35-3 (Root 14, Moeen 1)published at 16 overs

After drinks (an absolute necessity in this heat), Mehedi continues his spin assault and prompts a huge appeal against Moeen, aho is caught on the pad sweeping. The umpire shakes his head. Looked leg side.

The over-rate is good which will be needed because I can't see them going on much after five this afternoon. After five yesterday it was very dimpsey.

Shakib keeps up the pressure, although his fielder don't help him out as Mushfiqur and his slip fielder both assume each other are catching a throw to the wicket, with the ball splitting them for an overthrow - the only run of the over.

    Sounds impressive. I think.

  19. Eng 33-3 (Mehedi 7-2-10-2)published at 14 overs

What a debut this has already been for 18-year-old Mehedi Hasan Miraz. He is landing it well, turning it sharply and giving England all sort of problems. Root hooks one round the corner to get three more runs.

  20. Eng 29-3 (Moeen 0, Root 9)published at 13 overs

Another salvage job, Rooty? He goes on the counter-attack, dropping to one knee and sweeping Shakib powerfully for four. He follows it up with a pull for another boundary. It is the right approach. England can't just retreat and dig in. Moeen Ali is the new man.
