Si Lomas: My mate managed to make 5 consecutive golden ducks all bowled in 2nd XI cricket, unfortunate to get 5 consecutive straight balls.
The England non-playing party look very relaxed. Steven Finn is sporting a nice pair of shades. But for the whites they are obliged to wear, they'd be slathering on the lotion.
Duckett is not a man to ignore short, wide balls from a seamer. He latches on to a loose delivery from Shafiul and cuts for the game's first four.
Mehedi is not only getting turn but mixing it up with the one that skips on. It is worrying Duckett, who pokes at a couple before leaving one that just misses off. There has been nothing yet to wake us all up.

Peter Sowerby: It's been a privilege to have watched Cooky from his 1st XI debut aged 12/13 through five seasons, records tumbling, (to have been beaten more recently by James Kettleborough), through to his world record-breaking England career. Go big today.
It's catching (thankfully not literally). Cook plays a rash cut shot to a rising ball from Shafiul that beats the bat and prompts an appeal. The home players briefly consider a review but ultimately opt against it. The next ball is a repeat, without the appeal. The England skipper is finally away with a steer through mid-wicket for two.
Ben Duckett's first over in Test cricket is going to be spin. Off spin, in fact, from the right hand of Mehedi Hasan Miraz. Duckett's first Test shot is a bit rash as he swings big and misses the turning ball. After getting off the mark with two he is almost bowled, going back and missing with a chop as the ball skips just past the off stump. Settle down, Ben lad.

Simon Smale: Every player in the starting XI has a 1st class century? Have all the bunnies been culled from Test cricket!?
You've inadvertently kicked off our debate, Simon. We want you all to tell us about your club side's bunnies. Or, indeed, your favourite international cricket bunnies. The likes of Peter Such, Courtney Walsh and Shane Watson*...
* Only joking, Shane!
The first ball of the series is a yorker that swings in a touch and is dug out by Cook. The second beats the skipper outside off. Bit of rustiness after all that flying back and forth. Shafiul maintains a good line and completes a maiden. From the long shot of the stadium I can't see a fan. I can hear some faint cheering, though, so there must be some people here.
Here come Cook and Duckett. Shafiul Islam is going to take the new cherry.

BBC Test Match Special
It's a smallish crowd at the moment, but it is hard to get in. We came in as part of an armed convoy, which is quite dramatic. The ground's a complex within a complex.

Ex-England batter
For England, it doesn't matter if they have a 19-year-old guy or a 39-year-old guy playing. They just want the best man for the job.

A month ago, we would have said Hameed was going to start in this Test but things change. Duckett played well in the one-dayers and then got runs in the warm-up games. How could they leave him out?
Ben Duckett received his England captain from former skipper Mike Atherton. He knows a thing or two about opening the batting for his country.
