What a debut for the youngster, he has turned the ball and put doubts in the batsman's mind. It's a difficult job because once you start losing your wickets your mind starts playing tricks but you need to stick to basics and make sure you don't give your wicket away.

It is a brilliant review. The ball was hitting middle stump about halfway up. Can't be more out than that. Having won the toss, England are in huge bother now. They are being spun into a lather.

  4. Umpire reviewpublished at 12 overs

    Eng 21-2

Mushfiqur Rahim is screaming an appeal to Mehedi's last ball, which is quicker and skips on to catch Ballance out as he goes back. Is it bat? Is it pad? If it is the latter he could be in big, big trouble.

This is a great start but Bangladesh need to keep the pressure on and believe they can get through this batting line-up.

Russell Anderson: This Mehedi kid looks very good. Well deserved that, poor footwork from Duckett though.

Chris Wing: Hameed quietly happy he's not been selected after watching that Duckett delivery!

  7. Eng 21-2 (Ballance 1, Root 1)published at 11 overs

Gary Ballance is out to join his Yorkshire colleague Root. I reckon you can lose the lids lads. You ain't getting anything quick for a while. Root has to deal with an absolute snorter of a last ball that spins and rises and catches something before beating slip for a single. The umpire signals bye so it must have been arm or shoulder that it nicked.

Gareth Batty will be watching this and salivating.

I seriously feel we will have a result very quickly. There was turn but that was unlucky, coming off the glove and rolling onto the stumps.

My word, it is all happening now. The skipper has gone. Kamrul Islam Rabbi gets just the one over as Bangladesh turn, unsurprisingly, to spin from both ends. It pays immediate dividends as Shakib Al Hasan draws Cook into a sweep that sends the ball on to his own stumps. One thing is for certain - this game is not ending in a draw.

  10. Eng 18-1published at 10 overs

In comes Joe Root for his first action of the tour. I suspect he's going to be facing a lot of spin throughout his innings. It is twisting and turning like a twisty, turny thing.

I've not seen anything like this in a pitch for a long time. It has been very flat here and four of the last six matches have been draws The surface I saw had a lot more cracks opening up and we might see a result very quickly. Mehedi has been brilliant with bat and ball and that was a beauty, you can't do anything with that as a batsman.

What a ball! Mehedi steers a ball towards leg stump that grips, turns and takes out the top of middle and off, with Duckett playing about half-a-foot down the wrong line.

There's enough happening - the seamers have beaten the bat a few times when they've bowled full and there's certainly a lot for the spinners.

  14. Was it nailed on England would bat first after winning the toss?published at 05:32 British Summer Time 20 October 2016

No. Of the 52 Tests played in Bangladesh before this one, the captain winning the toss has chosen to field 14 times. That might surprise one or two people.

  15. Eng 18-0published at 9 overs

A bowling change. Shafiul goes for a blow with Kamrul Islam Rabbi taking the nut for his Test bowling bow. He's got a wide slingy action that Duckett takes a good long look at for five balls before pushing the last ball into the off side for a single.

  17. Eng 17-0 (Duckett 13, Cook 4)published at 8 overs

Mehedi continues to get grip and turn to rip the ball past the outside edge. Another maiden, patted out by Cook, who is slowly acclimatising himself after jetting back in following the birth of his second child. Speaking of which...

  18. Eng 17-0published at 7 overs

Runs. Duckett gets a couple from the outside edge of his straight bat but then finds the rope with a far more authoritative drive. That's why he is in the side.

Both these openers would be much happier if convention took its course and there were two seamers bustling in, giving them a bit of pace to play with. The ball has beaten the bat several times with genuine turn.

  20. Eng 11-0published at 6 overs

Oohs and aahs from the home side as Cook prods at and misses a sharply turning ball from Mehedi. There are louder shouts later as the spinner gets not only turn but a bit of pop to beat the England skipper again. Cook survives, though, and adds a couple to the total.

Fair play to Bangladesh, they have thrown England a bit of curve ball (well, more of a spin ball) by starting with Mehedi and the tourists are struggling to adapt.
