  1. Eng 116-5published at 43 overs

    Moeen 24, Bairstow 8

Bairstow, full of backlift and belief, opens his account with a neat sweep, pivoting to dispatch Shakib, and the slingy slow left-armer then presents him with a full toss which is firmly thumped through mid-on for four more, recording 1,000 runs in the calendar year for the Yorkshireman.

I watched a contrast in the nets the other day. Alastair Cook barely played a shot in an hour, but Jonny Bairstow was trying to smash it all over the place and the bowlers won that battle. It will be interesting to see how he deals with the dot balls and maidens.

  3. Eng 107-5published at 42 overs

    Moeen 23, Bairstow 0

Mehedi, round the wicket to the right-handed Bairstow with a slip, a leg gully and a short-leg poised for a catch. Resolute defence to the first five deliveries Jonny has faced.

Stokes didn't get out of the crease at all. He was rooted to the spot, on the back foot and he couldn't get forward again at all. Shakib deceived him and England are really struggling in these spinning conditions.

  6. Eng 106-5published at 41 overs

Jonny Bairstow is the new batsman, he keeps out his first two deliveries comfortably enough. What sort of innings are we going to see from the Yorkshireman?

Well Stokes HAD been pro-active, but the emphasis is on the past tense. Not really sure what sort of shot he was attempting there, half forward, half back, like a crab unsure of his plans for the afternoon and the ball whistles through bat and pad to crash into the timbers. Bangladesh are halfway through.

James Ash: You know what they say... "Never judge a pitch until England have been bowled out cheaply twice on it."

Colin: Missed the start but just same collapse as usual. With only a 1000 or so on the ground great crowd noise. But no pitch mics!

Ben Murray: Miserable #mcfc, external fan, but at least I woke up consoled by the thought of a solid England top order performance. Oh.

    Mehedi 3-22 off 16

Mehedi's 16th over, more than some spinners bowl in a season. Moeen sweeps him for two and begins to look more settled, those reviews put firmly to the back of his mind.

Pro-active is the buzzword and that's what Stokes is doing here. Consecutive clips into the mid-wicket off Shakib bring him a total of four runs and he has almost caught up with Moeen.

It is an intriguing battle. Moeen is battling away. He has been hit on the pad too often for comfort and has had to wait for all those reviews, but he is still there.

  12. Eng 100-4published at 38 overs

After 15 dot balls, Moeen gets the scoreboard moving again with a turn off the pads for one and Stokes pushes the mercurial Mehedi for another single to record the England 100. Will they get to 200? Stay tuned.

It's all happening in this match. At one stage, I thought Mushfiqur got it wrong by replacing Shakib with the seamer. However, he now has to realise there's two left-handers at the crease and it might be time for an off-spinner to replace Shakib.

  14. Eng 98-4published at 37 overs

Bangladesh have won only one of their 14 matches at this ground, losing eight, and have lost all eight of their previous Tests against England remember. But what sort of total will they be replying to in this one? Stokes could be crucial to that question and he tries another sweep to a leg-side delivery from Shakib, rather like the one that got Cook out. It brushes the glove but luckily for England stops short of trickling back towards the stumps.

  15. Eng 98-4published at 36 overs

    Moeen 19, Stokes 13

Mehedi rips another past the outside edge of Moeen but it goes down in the scorebook as another maiden, the sixth of the match.

    Eng 98-4published at 35 overs

The average first innings total at this ground in the last six matches is 382 but we might not see that many in the entire match at this rate. Stokes has come out with plenty of intent, however, he saunters down the wicket to Shakib and clips him over mid-wicket. It lands on the rope and after several reviews it is confirmed as the first six of the match

Moeen is reining himself in and playing in a more defensive manner now - he doesn't want to be in a position where he has to review another lbw decision.

  18. Eng 90-4published at 34 overs

    Moeen 18, Stokes 6

Just to confirm, Mehedi is an off-spinner, but the deliveries bounce and turn like a leggie, they are being taken by Mushfiqur, little fellow though he is, at chest height. Stokes thumps one narrowly out of the reach of the short cover fielder and we're dealing with hard-fought singles at this stage.

It's an important innings for Moeen. Both Stokes and Bairstow have been demoted below him in the order, and that won't happen too often.

  20. Eng 89-4published at 33 overs

Another cleanly hit sweep from Stokes for a single is the only scoring shot in the Shakib over. But the pressure is palpable, every ball an event. Classic Test cricket.
