Even though he's a spinner, Mehedi will still need a rest at some point. He's 18, he's on debut, it's 40 degrees and 80% humidity.

  3. 6 runs

    Eng 140-5published at 50 overs

    Moeen 40, Bairstow 14

Moeen making use of the reprieves. A skip down the wicket to Mehedi and a delightful lofted stroke over long-on for six, followed by a dismissive pull for four when the 18-year-old spinner, in his 21st over, drops short.

Lee Pickrell: Moeen Ali 5 - DRS 0.

Andi: Mo Ali with more lives than a cat this morning!

Joe Cottrell: Can Moeen pick either my lottery numbers or my accumulator this weekend please.

  5. dropped catch

    Dropped catchpublished at 49 overs

    Bairstow dropped on 13

A reprieve - not for Moeen this time - but for Bairstow. He drives at slow left-armer Taijul, gets a thick edge and it is spilled by Sabbir at slip. Three maidens in a row.

  6. Eng 128-5published at 48 overs

    Moeen 29, Bairstow 13

Just to confirm, Bangladesh have used their two unsuccessful reviews, England still have both of theirs to use, and they are probably going to need them.

  7. Not outpublished at 47.3 overs

It is pitching outside leg stump and Moeen the magician survives again. It is the sixth review of the innings, Moeen has survived five and was out from one that was not reviewed. If that makes sense. Anyway, Bangladesh have no reviews left now.

  8. Umpire reviewpublished at 47.3 overs

My word Sam, you wouldn't get a plastic pint and some sunblushed tomato flavoured crisps at Lord's for that, would you? But hang on, Moeen is the subject of yet another review. It has been given not out, let's see.

Sam Hunt: Spicy 1st day of cricket. Really wet the whistle for the tour. Glad I bought a five day pass to the Rajkot test. £12 well spent!

  10. Eng 128-5published at 47 overs

Left-arm spinner Taijul after an opening three over spell of 0-10 resumes after drinks with a slip and a short-leg in place. It's not one of the more threatening overs we've seen, but Bairstow is in respectful mode and he plays out a maiden.

It's critical that England get to 250, particularly because this wicket will deteriorate. The match is unlikely to go five days but it should go four days.

Matt Skilleter: I know they say both teams have to bat to understand what a good score is on a pitch. But what is a good score on this pitch??

Paul Cotterill: I think B'desh might be rightly miffed to see this series regarded as just warm-up for India. They are a class side.

Some observations on comments already sent in. Hasseb: to those who feel he should have opened as Duckett fails. That ball would have got ANY left hander in the team out and probably in the world. Ballance: despite a very good Test average he just has not got enough runs in any form of cricket in the last year to justify recall. I would bat Bairstow at 4 ( ranked 12 in world) and play Buttler who unlike the rest is already acclimatised and can destroy spinners. If you just hang around on these type of wickets you bat the bowlers into a rhythm and will eventually get a Duckett ball with no runs on the board.

A fiercely-hit sweep from Moeen in front of square brings him his third boundary, the first conceded by the 18-year-old debutant Mehedi, and it's time for a much needed drinks break.

It's handy that Bangladesh's over rate has been good because it gets dark quickly here. Judging on last night, there won't be any play beyond 5pm local time (12 noon).

  16. Eng 124-5published at 45 overs

    Shakib 2-44 off 14

A third boundary for Bairstow, confidently driven through the covers off Shakib, who is one short of 150 Test wickets.

Jamie Garwood: Have to ask why Cook rushed back for these tests. Why not play both Duckett/Hameed as a straight shoot out for No. 2 slot v India.

Chris Butcher: Error from England. Hameed must play, will just bat. Balance passed last chance saloon. Oh no wait, he plays for Yorkshire.

  18. Eng 118-5published at 44 overs

The humidity is upwards of 70% and they reckon it feels like 40 degrees out there but Bairstow, thick beard under his weighty blue England helmet, scampers a quick single off the dangerous Mehedi.

Johnny Bairstow should be batting at 4 to stop these early order rots. He's a better batsman than the three ahead of him in the order.

Bairstow is only the second wicketkeeper in history to achieve 1,000 runs in the calendar year. The other was Andy Flower, who scored 1,045 runs for Zimbabwe in 2000.
