Elliott Bewley: Tough to be Moeen. A good score up the order but if he struggles bowling, we're bound to renew the debate on his best position.

  3. Eng 173-5published at 60 overs

    Moeen 61, Bairstow 26

The Mahmudullah experiment ends after two overs for 17 and the more penetrative Shakib restores order, just the single for Moeen in the over.

Rather a different prospect for Bairstow at the other end against wily slow left-armer taijul, who sends down his sixth maiden.

But surely Joe is one of those three Chris? he didn't play in the one-dayers. Anyway, Moeen continues to flourish. Mahmudullah is not providing the sternest test, admittedly, but the boundaries are still easy on the eye, a lofted drive over long-on and a fiercely struck straight drive too fast for the bowler's hopeful, outstretched hand

Chris Williams: Any coincidence that 3 best batsmen so far have been in Bangladesh the longest? Thought not. #poorpreparation, external

Taijul is denied another maiden when Moeen clips a single into the leg-side from the final delivery of the over.

Choose Toast: Really unfashionable opinion but don't we overhype Ben Stokes' batting? Big scores in easy circumstances. Rest is in 20s.

Thomas Bonser: Think the team is all wrong here, can't agree with Ballance/Batty - over Hameed/Ansari & then move Duckett down to 4.

The fifth Bangladesh spinner, Mahmudullah, enters the fray but a beautiful, calmly-played cut behind square from Bairstow brings up the fifty partnership from 88 balls, Jonny's share 22. He pulls another four to a short delivery and has now hit six boundaries.

James Taylor: This is actually a pretty decent recovery from 21-3 in difficult conditions. 250 would be a half respectable total.

Not THAT James Taylor. He'd have been useful carving out a score in these testing conditions.

  12. Eng 154-4published at 55 overs

Taijul still finding some occasional sharp spin but a resolute Bairstow, emphatic even when leaving the ball, plays out another maiden, Taijul's fifth in eight overs.

Moeen has lived a slightly charmed life, but he's showed patience and applied himself. England need him to keep going if they're to get anywhere near the 250 they need.

Kamrul is back for only the 10th over of seam in the innings. He starts with a modestly paced low full toss and a grateful Moeen pushes it down the ground for his fifth four. The left-hander brings up an eventful eighth Test fifty from 127 balls with another crisply-hit boundary.

    Moeen 42, Bairstow 18

Bairstow's power is often talked about but this is a delightfully timed push off the back foot with a perfectly straight bat to Taijul and brings him a fourth boundary. Taijul then finds the edge with a good one that turns away from the bat but it falls short of Sabbir at slip.

Personally think England got their whole team wrong.

Hameed and Cook should have opened, with Duckett at 4. The one thing England have missed in the last 3-4 years is a KP type player that will score runs quickly in any conditions and I think Duckett is that man. Also, Ansari should have played over Batty and this was his chance to show England before they go to India what he would bring to the team.

Mehedi continues, still spinning the occasional delivery drastically, but he is denied a maiden when Moeen paddle sweeps the final ball of the over for two.

Nick Asker: Can't say Moeen is lucky - not his fault that umpires make mistakes and Bangladesh review poorly!

  20. Eng 140-5published at 51 overs

    Taijul 0-10 off 6

A third successive maiden for Taijul. He is not turning the ball much and often drops a shade short, but there are subtle pace variations and Bairstow is wisely not going to give his wicket away.
