Winning the toss on this sort of pitch does give you an advantage if you're good enough to bat well. The day started brilliantly for England. After that, it was all India until towards the end, when Anderson bowled well again.

Unquestionably India's day. A total of 500-plus looks likely, particularly with Virat Kohli looking in wonderful touch. England hardly bowled badly, but they never managed to apply pressure consistently - with the spinners in particular showing a lack of control.

It's been a good day for India, a good toss to have won. Virat Kohli has played with control and finesse, he had determination as soon as he walked to the crease. It's been really good strokeplay.

  4. Close of play - Ind 317-4published at 90 overs

    Kohli 151, Ashwin 1

Broad, his hair immaculate given it's so late in the day, charging in despite his sore feet. Ashwin, a nightwatchman with a Test average of 34, negotiates the over. It's a maiden - and that's your lot for today.

Dan Jacobs: Root has scored runs all over the world, Kohli plays on roads and can't play the swinging ball.

Suraj: It's not that Kohli can't play bouncing ball very well, check his 100s in Aus/SA! Like Kohli failed in Eng, Root did in Aus.

  6. Ind 317-4published at 89 overs

And Stuart Broad will bowl the final over of the day. Another wicket might just make England the happier of the two sides. Might.

This has been poor. It was poor not to take the second new ball, then they don't have a gully in place for the new man. It's a beautiful delivery to Ashwin that he edges, straight in the gap to third man for one. You can't believe it.

  8. dropped catch

    Close!published at 88.5 overs

    Ind 317-4

And almost another! Good shape from Anderson, a flat-footed Ravichandran Ashwin drives loosely, and the edge flies where gully may well have been. Anderson throws his head back in the air as Alastair Cook belatedly brings an extra catcher in.

This is looking like finishing on a similar note to the first day at Rajkot, where England were 310-4. It's poor batting. There's no footwork from Rahane, he's just left the bat out to dry. There's a little movement and a good catch from Bairstow.

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 88.3 overs

    Rahane c Bairstow b Anderson 23 (Ind 316-4)

What would you know?! The new cherry does the trick. Anderson finds swing away from Rahane, who hangs his bat limply outside off stump. The edge is faint, Bairstow's catch secure. Huge boost for England late on.

  12. Ind 316-3published at 88 overs

Rashid completes his over, Anderson trudges back on, hands his cap to the umpire.. and the new ball is finally taken. Let's see if it makes a difference for the two overs remaining in the day...

It's been a measured innings. Kohli is never dull because he's such a beautiful player. He hasn't taken many risks apart from the reverse-sweep that resulted in an lbw review.

  14. 150 runs

150 for Kohlipublished at 87.1 overs

This is shaping into a biggie for the India captain. He brings up his 150 with a single off Rashid. Cue subdued raising of the bat, firm handshake with Rahane and stern expression. He looks hungry for more.

    Kohli 149, Rahane 22

James Anderson back into the attack - but still no new ball. Interesting from England. No seam movement, no swing - regular or reverse - and Kohli and Rahane are untroubled. Anderson completes his over and leaves the field, not for the first time today.

H: Calling Root a better batsman than Kohli is a ridiculous shout - look at overall records and styles and it's Kohli by a mile.

Blue Hatchet Man: Joe Root better than Virat Kohli? Like saying Adam Lallana is better than Neymar.

A reminder that, in our vote, 62% of those who took part picked Root as the better batsman.

  18. Ind 309-3published at 86 overs

I wonder when Rashid last bowled this many overs - 25 now - on the first day of a match. A fine chase and dive from Alastair Cook saves him a boundary at mid-wicket, although the ball boy is not so lucky as the England skipper goes tumbling into him.

Stuart Broad looks like he has bowled 100 overs. He's hobbling around at backward point. They can't throw the new ball to him today.

Stuart Broad spent time off the field this morning with a cut wrist. Now he's limping and doesn't look like he's going to take the new ball any time soon. Ansari it is then, inducing a defensive push from Kohli that just lands short of Alastair Cook, fielding almost where Ansari ends his follow-through at short mid-off. Much better from the left-arm spinner.
