I was umpiring in the Bristol & District league, last 10 overs, light failing, close game, bit of a grudge match - a balloon from the Bristol Balloon Fiesta landed at mid wicket. Stopped play until all the fielders and all batsmen from pavilion rushed out to carry it off over the boundary, united as one team.

  2. Ind 301-3published at 84 overs

None of England's spinners have found their rhythm today, although Rashid has been the pick of them. Rahane fails to pick the googly, but it's marginally too short and he has time to adjust. He collects a couple off the final ball to take India past 300.

They have to be careful. Whatever the dog left behind is still there.

  4. Ind 298-3published at 83 overs

    Kohli 142, Rahane 15

Left-arm spinner Ansari round the wicket; he's too short - a grubber spares his blushes as Kohli ends up playing it one-handed - and then too full. He ends the over with one right on the money, pitching on and straightening. It is met with the face of Rahane's broad bat.

They say it's going to turn and it probably will, but today it has been like a featherbed.

  6. Ind 297-3published at 82 overs

England call on Adil Rashid again - the leggie back for his 23rd over of a tiring day. He manages a better length than Moeen, but little in the way of threat.

    Ansari 10-1-41-0

The new ball is available - but England opt against taking it. Instead, Ansari continues, with a slip and short cover crouching, waiting. They're not needed. A single apiece for Rahane and Kohli.

That was very, very close and a terrible shot given the way he has played.

    Ind 294-3

Ball-tracking suggests the ball was going to hit the stumps, but not by enough for the decision to be overturned. Just a little leg side. Kohli survives. England lose a review - and immediately regain it because we have reached 80 overs.

It would be a horrible way to go. This rule about two new reviews after 80 overs in an anomaly. Then again, this looks a good one.

    Kohli 139 (Ind 294-3)

Kohli is struck on the pad as he attempts a reverse sweep at Moeen. A shake of the head from umpire Rod Tucker. England want another look...

Since Ben Stokes made his Test debut, only one bowler with a minimum of 500 deliveries has a higher percentage of four balls: Australia's Mitchell Starc.

Steady from Ansari. One off the over. That counts as a qualified success for England. They need some control here.

Remember when Anderson removed Pujara, all of a sudden the pitch started doing all sorts, and England fans sensed an opening? Well, Kohli and Rahane have firmly shut that door. Nothing door for Moeen, who concedes two singles off the over. With two to go until the second new ball is available, Zafar Ansari gets a twirl.

Stokes has talent, but there's always a four ball thrown in. That means it's a really bad ball, not just one from which you sneak a single or two. It's no different to a spinner bowling a bad ball. His batting talent has been harnessed. Can someone do the same with his bowling?

  19. Ind 287-3published at 77 overs

There's precious little margin for error for the bowlers on this pitch - but, even so, that's poor from Stokes. Kohli cuts a wide long hop for four - his 15th of an innings that is increasingly looking like it will shape this match. A sweat-stained Stokes makes no attempt to hide his disgust as he collects his cap at the end of the over.

Olly Rex: There's a book 'Penguins stopped play' about playing in all 7 continents - the title implies what happened in Antarctica.

Indeed, Olly, it was written by the late comedy producer Harry Thompson, documenting the adventures of his amateur team, the Captain Scott XI.
