  1. Ind 283-3published at 76 overs

Easy pickings for batsmen at village level, never mind top-order India players on a pitch that resembles the M6. Moeen drops short - again - and Rahane forces off the back foot with power and placement.

On a Loughborough University tour to St Lucia we had a rampaging donkey stop play. The lad at deep mid wicket refused to go back out there, gave cow corner a new name.

  3. Ind 276-3published at 75 overs

    Kohli 128, Rahane 7

Leggy from Stokes, classy from Kohli. The India skipper whips disdainfully to fine leg for four, but follows it with a rather airy drive through a vacant gully region. Rahane opens the face to collect his first boundary. Stokes swings an angry boot at the turf.

  4. Vote result - Root 'a better batsman than Kohli'published at 10:24 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2016

Our vote is closed and the results are in - England's Joe Root is a better batsman than India captain Virat Kohli, according to 62% of those who took part.

Thanks to all of you who voted - we'll stand back and wait for the argument to intensify.

  5. Ind 267-3published at 74 overs

    Moeen 8-0-37-0

A double bowling change, Moeen Ali replacing Rashid. Too short from England's offie, though, and he's a little fortunate to concede only three singles in that over.

When England bowled a couple of short balls at Pujara and Kohli, it was the only real time India looked uncomfortable. They don't play the short ball very well.

Fielding at deep square whilst walking in a during in a 60-over game for Sherborne against Midsomer Norton a Vietnamese pot belly pig ran past me as she escaped from the next-door pub. Players and spectators chased the the short legged beauty for 20 minutes, she was incredibly quick.

  8. Ind 264-3published at 73 overs

A change of bowling - Ben Stokes back into the attack in place of James Anderson, and a few degrees cooler after almost exploding when Rashid dropped that catch at fine leg earlier. Kohli was on 56 at the time. Maybe it's best not to remind England of that. A rejected lbw appeal against Rahane won't improve Stokes' mood, mind. Maiden over. Let's have some drinks.

    Kohli 121, Rahane 2

This is the day that keeps on giving. The Cookie Monster, last spotted during the Old Trafford Test against Pakistan this summer, is in the crowd. He's even brought his trusty Little Bo Peep female companion with him. Five off that Rashid over, including a beautifully placed square drive for four from Kohli.

Anderson has bowled very well. He's bowled with zip. It's always a worry after a long lay-off that the rhythm won't be there. The ball still isn't doing much, though.

  12. Ind 259-3published at 71 overs

9 overs until second new ball

Kohli firmly in cruise control now. When Anderson twice drifts on to his pads, he twice collects an easy couple. Anderson, the class act that he is, then beats the bat with one that just holds its line.

  14. Ind 255-3published at 70 overs

    Kohli 113, Rahane 1

Rashid into his 21st over of the day - he has bowled almost a third of England's 70 so far. Whoa whoa whoa! what do we have here? Turn and bounce off the final ball of the over - but a smidge too short to worry Rahane. Encouragement - and trepidation - for England in equal measure. They must bat last on this pitch, let's not forget.

The best news I've had today: the Vizag dog is on Twitter. An Instagram account must be in the offing too. And surely it's only a matter of time before he has own YouTube channel. Rahane tucks Anderson off his pads to get off the mark.

Rashid deserves credit for continuing to toss it up, however much the scorecard is in India's favour. Kohli, who showed what a wonderful player of spin he is during the fourth innings in Rajkot, opens himself up to drive stylishly though cover for two. Youngsters, take note. The 250 is up.

England need Kohli. If they can get him tonight they will know they have got rid of someone who can go really big on a wicket like this.
