Kohli watches from the other end as Rahane blocks out the remainder of Rashid's over. What a Test match he's had. The odd field placings when India were trying to turn the screw on England have probably been the only blot on his report card.

This Virat Kohli is playing a different game. The pitch has done plenty - there's spin, bounce, reverse swing. This is where he shows his class - he stands out a mile. he has made it look very easy indeed.

Rahane gets a huge cheer as he jogs off strike to let Kohli, on 49, face Rashid. Rashid tosses it up, Kohli says thank you very much and crashes it away towards cover to take him to another very nice half-century.

LaDiDa: Is there some sort of algorithm for getting Kohli out? If so, England could do with it.

  5. Ind 87-3published at 31 overs

    Rahane 19, Kohli 49

Ben Stokes is going to have one last crack at getting a late wicket. He comes charging out of the shadows to Kohli, but the first ball is some short rubbish down the leg side and the India captain is happy to let it go by. Stokes offers some choice advice to Kohli, who ignores him before pulling another short 'un away for a single.

India are going to be close to 300 at the close. They might bat until lunch tomorrow...

  7. Ind 85-3published at 30 overs

    Lead by 285

Rashid tries to tempt Kohli, tossing one up temptingly into his eyeline, but Kohli plays it into the off side. He looks happy enough to see things through to stumps now, just jogging an easy single to round off the over.

  8. Ind 84-3published at 29 overs

Lights on at the ground now, Rahane carefully defending forward as he watches Moeen like a hawk. It's an over of deliveries that stay low but don't really turn, forcing Rahane to jab his bat down on everything. That'll be a maiden.

Another low one from Rashid but short, and it's not difficult for Kohli to pull it away for two. However the next one turns, and it turns sharply, beating Kohli's defences and settling into Bairstow's gloves. The shadows are starting to lengthen now in Vizag.

The damage was done yesterday - in one session. England have fought hard today, but if they get out of this it will be a monumental achievement.

  12. Ind 80-3published at 27 overs

Bit too short from Moeen so far. Kohli batters a wide half-volley away for another couple and tucks another one off his pads to keep the score ticking over. The tables have turned a little when it comes to the Moeen-Rashid partnership. It's Rashid applying the pressure here, while Moeen takes some time to adjust and settle into a rhythm.

Ben Stokes might be the most dedicated fielder in the England side. He goes haring after a little tickle from Kohli that flies to fine leg, and Stokes chucks himself after it to knock the ball back in and save a run. Ooft! That spun from Rashid, turning more than an outstretched Rahane expected and just skidding past the outside edge.

    Rahane 16, Kohli 37

Cook tinkers about with the field for an age as Moeen gets ready to twirl his arm over. His second ball is a long hop that Rahane hammers straight along the ground to cover. He looks sadly at his bat - that deserved the full kitchen sink treatment. Zafar Ansari, recovered from his illness, then does well down in the deep to cut off a boundary.

Kohli spoons Rashid up into the air as he tries to work him through leg, but there's no fielders lurking nearby and he'll get away with that one. Rashid keeps him in check after that, mixing up his length and keeping Kohli on the defensive. That's his first maiden of the innings.

England have just got to keep going. They've got to keep thinking positive. Another wicket slows everything down. They shouldn't go defensive - it helps the bowlers if you've still got people catching.

  19. Ind 68-3published at 23 overs

    Rahane 13, Kohli 36

That's a shot and a half from Rahane. Too wide from Anderson and Rahane creams it through the covers, holding the pose for the snappers beyond the boundary. Anderson finally gets to have a go at Kohli and tests him out with a short ball that barely gets up on the bat, before Kohli runs a single down to backward point.
