    Target 405

And that's your lot for the day. Root follows Cook off the field; Cook keeps his head down while Kohli gathers his team together and delivers an emphatic pep talk. That late wicket will give them a late boost.

Cook lbw Jadeja 54 (Eng 87-2)

Ravindra Jadeja, the master of timing. There's nothing on snicko, Cook's been smacked well in front of the stumps, and that's out. The England captain has to leave. Gone in the final over of the day. He looks, understandably, gutted.

This is a big moment in the day, a big moment in the game.

Oh! Has Jadeja got Cook in the last over? He's given out lbw but Cook reckons he's hit that - upstairs we go.

Rory Pyrke: People wonder why the younger generation prefer T20- shouldn't be too hard to figure out why when looking at this game.

Sandra Passmore: Some of us oldies love this type of cricket. Don't worry about the young fans. They will get it in the fullness of time.

    Cook 54, Root 5

Kohli's last throw of the dice for the day is to bring Umesh Yadav on. Is that a hint of reverse? Root clips nicely into midwicket but Ashwin full on sprawls to cut off a boundary, but then Umesh hurries him up and Root topples over trying to keep that one from sneaking through. Final over coming up.

Got to feel for Hameed. Run out in the first innings and then gets that!

    Tom

The records will read "just 25 runs" from Hameed but that was an excellent knock. Whisper it quietly but can we perhaps finally remove that faded dog-eared "England opener vacancy" advertisement from the job centre window?

Don't go back to those, Joseph. Everyone pleads with Dharmasena as Root moves deep onto his stumps to Jadeja, but it looks like it's sliding down. Oh, and the replay shows a big ol' inside edge. Probably just as well India have lost their reviews. Kohli wouldn't have been a happy bunny if he'd reviewed that and seen an edge.

I love that stat about Cook's 50. Give me a blockathon any day of the week. Kohli is chirping away, trying his best to disrupt his opposite number. Cook blocks everything Ashwin sends him back down the pitch. Totally in the zone.

Alastair Cook's fifty came off 172 balls, his slowest in Tests.

    Eng 84-1

Cook turns the ball away and jogs a single to bring up his 50. He's got concentration written all over his face. He raises his bat towards the crowd but there's more work to be done here. That's his 53rd Test half-century. If you wanted someone to block a day out, Cook's the one you'd be asking for.

This is Edgbaston 2005 after a makeover for the purists. Every delivery, every stroke/non stroke has relevance and intensity. Anyone who isn't loving every moment of this, should probably accept that Test cricket isn't for them.

    Cook 49, Root 4

I'd love to know what Cook is saying to himself here. Ashwin is getting that ball to stay so low. It's constantly into Cook's bat, then onto his pad, and the fielders are happy to yell for anything. Ashwin looks more dangerous when he drags his line back a tad. Five overs left.

    3 fours, 2 twos, 9 singles

Here's Hameed's wagon wheel, what little there is of it. Of the 144 balls he faced, 130 were dot balls. He's got a seriously impressive temperament.

    Target 405

Cook inside edges onto his pad, the ball balloons up, and it races away through a gap in the field. Jadeja tries to give Root the hurry up as he gets into position, which brings a chirp from short leg that Root can't resist responding to. There's an extra bit of enthusiasm in the yelling when Jadeja hits Root on the pad, but that was going down leg.

This is where India really need to make it count. They want two wickets tonight. This is huge psychologically to get one of these players out.
