Jay: So much for all the advantages that batting first in India. Planes flying above might be a good excuse this time.

David: Moeen is not and will never be a top order batsman. This is dismal. The gingers to the rescue again!

    Stokes 5, Bairstow 20

Stokes takes full advantage of this quick outfield with a little push that runs away for four. An admirable effort from the fielder, who chased it all the way, but ended up looking a little daft as the ball beat him by a distance. Stokes sees out the rest of the over without any fuss.

Moeen shook his head as he walked off, as well he might. Three men waiting for that shot, and Moeen obliged. Bairstow has been joined by Stokes, and contents himself with defending the rest of the over.

There was a short leg, a fine leg and a deep square leg. The bouncer came and Moeen helped it round. Vijay, the catcher, did not have to move. Having played well again the spin, Moeen has fallen to the old trap. England have squandered the benefit of winning the toss. Three pretty senior player - Root, Cook and Moeen - will know they have lost it.

    Moeen 16 c Vijay b Shami (Eng 87-4)

Charitable, this, from England, as Moeen is the next batsman to gift India his wicket. Shami returns and bangs in a short one that Moeen tries to help on its way. However he top edges his pull and the ball soars up and then down to the man on the boundary. He barely has to move to see the ball safely into his hands.

    Ashwin 6-0-10-1

There's an almighty rumble over the ground as another plane goes on its merry way over the ground. It doesn't bother Ashwin. He continues to vary his pace to Moeen, who is using his feet nicely at the crease. He's more than content to pat everything away into the off side.

Jayant keeps the pressure on. He gives you nothing free and is so accurate.

  9. Eng 85-3published at 25 overs

Bairstow decides he likes Moeen's tactic of attacking Jayant. His first ball is full, and Bairstow sweeps it over his shoulder and down to the fine leg boundary. The umpires then have a quick word with Kohli, who has accidentally hit Bairstow with the ball as he threw it towards the wicketkeeper. He offers the traditional raised hand as an apology.

    Bairstow 14, Moeen 15

Moeen and Bairstow meet everything Ashwin has to offer them with the middle of the bat, nabbing a few singles in the process. Kohli then entertains the crowd with a keepy-uppy as the ball rolls towards him at the end of the over.

That's a shot. Moeen's decided he's had enough of this blocking malarkey. A little shuffle down the pitch and he drives Jayant up and over for four. The next ball is even better, a long hop that Moeen likes the look of and hammers over the ropes and into the vacant seats for six. Jayant finishes an expensive over by beating Bairstow, playing deep in his crease, with a skiddy one.

Hameed was blameless, but the dismissals of England's bankers will be the source of some frustration. Root completely misjudged the length. He's such a big wicket for England.

  14. Eng 67-3published at 22 overs

    Ashwin 4-0-6-1

Ashwin catches Moeen in two minds, the batsman tempted to lob a drive at a slow delivery, but he changes his mind at the last minute. Ashwin has his hands on his head, before spearing in a much quicker one that Moeen shovels away from his pads.

  16. Eng 66-3published at 21 overs

That's a superb bit of fielding from Murali Vijay, sliding down in front of the ropes to knock the ball back and save a boundary. Bairstow then recovers from a lucky inside edge to clatter Jayant through the covers for four. Ashwin tries to stop the ball and ends up leaping over it, bringing a few choice words from his captain. It's not been his day in the field.

    Moeen 2, Bairstow 3

Ashwin fires through another over, cranking his speeds up with every delivery, and Moeen and Bairstow content themselves with swapping singles. There's some ooh's as Bairstow plays across the line, but the Yorkshireman merely shakes his head and gets down to the other end.

Two very poor shots from our two best batsmen. Let's hope we don't throw away the advantage of winning the toss.

Umpire Gaffaney goes leaping out of the way as Bairstow hammers a straight drive in his direction, but Jayant gets his hand down to save a boundary and the umpire's toes. It's a small crowd in Mohali, albeit an enthusiastic one, and they cheer Jayant as Bairstow defends his way through the rest of the over.
