  1. dropped catch

Cook dropped on 23published at 10.5 overs

    Eng 32-1

Dropped! Again! That's dreadful from Ashwin. Cook pops a Shami delivery straight up to mid-wicket, almost like catching practice. And Ashwin drops it. In and out of the hands. Shami has an agonised scream as Ashwin beats a hasty retreat.

He lost the bat at the same time, he got hit on the hand. It was a simple decision because it bounced more than he anticipated and took the glove. Credit goes to Umesh for getting something out of the pitch.

  3. wicket

    Hameed c Rahane b Umesh 9 (Eng 32-1)

First one down! Umesh gets one to bounce up on an unsuspecting Hameed and it raps him on the hand before flying up to gully. Rahane moves forward to take the catch and, after a momentary pause, Hameed departs.

Parthiv goes flying to his left to snaffle up a Shami delivery that went whizzing off the seam. There's been some real movement after the ball has pitched. Shami sets up Cook nicely, sending the ball past his off stump before getting one to move back in and rap him on the thigh pad. The lbw shout goes on for a while, but umpire Gaffaney is unmoved. A maiden.

  6. Eng 32-0published at 8 overs

    Cook 23, Hameed 9

Umesh beats Hameed's defensive poke forward before the next ball finds the edge, and promptly flies through the slips for four. Hameed stays in his stance for a long time, ignoring Umesh's furious look as Kohli folds his arms at slips. Excellent sunglasses from Kohli, as an aside. It's a style you normally see on hipsters, rather than the captain of a Test team.

It is eight years and 107 days since Parthiv Patel last played Test cricket. hat's the sixth longest gap for India, but the five men ahead of him are all because of World War II.

He's missed 83 games, which is most missed between matches by an Indian. He's also third on that list, after missing 43 matches earlier in his career. There are only three other men in the history of the game with two gaps of 40 matches or more: Brian Close, Fred Titmus and Brad Hogg.

Another outside edge, this time from Hameed, drops in front of Jadeja at third slip. Jadeja offers up a rueful smile as Hameed readjusts. He nicks a single from the final ball of the over, looking relatively serene.

Cook isn't moving as well as he might. He's got an edge, he's been beaten. In between he's played a couple of lovely strokes.

  10. Eng 27-0published at 6 overs

    Cook 23, Hameed 4

There's not much of a crowd in at Mohali, although Saturday is a working day. Cook gives the England fans, who serenaded the stadium with Jerusalem this morning, something to cheer with a clip off his pads that beats a sprawling mid-on to fly for four. Umesh bangs it in, and Cook hooks, and hooks for another boundary. That's his fifth of the morning.

These early morning starts are so perfectly timed with my two-month-old daughter waking up and crying like me for some Cook runs.

That's enough to keep my bleary eyes open, as Cook cover drives Shami to the boundary. He doesn't make it look particularly pretty, but if it works, does it really matter? Shami responds with two crackers that just beat Cook's outside edge. When he does find the edge, it rolls along the ground to third slip, leaving Kohli thoroughly unimpressed.

According to Twitter, there are still hundreds of people trying to get in. One correspondent says that someone has passed out in the queue. It doesn't sound good.

  14. Eng 14-0published at 4 overs

    Cook 11, Hameed 3

Umesh lets loose with a shorter delivery that bounces twice before clattering into Parthiv's knees. The fuller length works better, beating Hameed's outside edge by a whisker. The opener readjusts, ignoring the hands on heads from the slip cordon, and whips the next ball away off his pads for a couple.

  15. Eng 12-0published at 3 overs

The replay shows that Jadeja didn't lay so much as a finger on that chance, it went so quickly. Cook tucks in to some leg stump stuff from Shami, clipping it away for a boundary,  before seeing out the rest of the over.

That's flown off the bat. Cook was turning it on the leg side and it took the edge. Jadeja was nowhere near it.

Play has been momentarily held up by an aircraft. And that's a drop! Shami finds Cook's outside edge and it flies straight through Jadeja's hands at third slip. That went so quick. To add insult to injury, it's gone for four.

Coming to Mohali confused packing a bit. Everywhere else is very hot. There are still people coming in, but the crowd is dismal.

  19. Eng 4-0published at 2 overs

    Cook 3, Hameed 1

That is an excellent party effort. I had my phone confiscated by a mate a few years back when England were battling to save a Test against New Zealand. Anyway, Umesh Yadav will open at the opposite end. He tries a short ball that barely gets up on Hameed's bat, before sticking to some off-stump theory.
