  1. Eng 54-3published at 18 overs

Two men around the bat for Moeen as he faces Ashwin, but he's not playing at anything he doesn't have to. He defends everything Ashwin twirls his way, before meeting Bairstow in the middle for a chinwag.

India can now just play the waiting game. They have had two gifts and the pressure is on this pair. They can't afford to make a mistake. It's doing nothing for the spinners.

    Jayant 3-2-0-1

Jayant continues, this time to Moeen, who averages a shade over 19 against spinners in Asia. He's using his feet constantly, trying to throw Jayant off his line, but Jayant keeps him in check. That'll be another maiden.

David: Two ridiculously loose shots from the senior batsman in the side. Absolutely pathetic.

Eddy McEdFace: Agh! What is going off out there? Stupid.

    Bairstow 1, Moeen 1

Root and Cook have handed India two wickets on a plate after winning such a good toss. It's left Bairstow and Moeen, both batting in new positions, facing a fired-up India. Bairstow gets underway before Ashwin fires through the rest of the over.

That was the only way Ashwin could get himself back into the good books of the team after dropping Cook. It's skidded on, not short enough for the cut. It's perfect for India. England have gifted them two wickets.

Ashwin's got Cook with his first ball! He dropped him earlier and now he's got him. It was a real loosener. Short outside off stump and Cook chopped at it, and it was an easy catch for Parthiv behind the stumps. Cook keeps his head down as he walks off.

Root got into a real tangle. He was trying to paddle it into the leg side.

  10. Eng 51-2published at 15 overs

Interesting move from Root, to play a shot that looks worse every time you see it on a replay. He was not happy as he walked off. Moeen starts his new role at number four by coming down the pitch to each Jayant delivery, but he can't beat the field. That's a wicket-maiden to get us up and running after drinks.

He looked like he was going to play the pull shot, then the sweep shot, then nothing at all. It looked pre-meditated, which he doesn't need to do. He's too good a player for that.

Er. About Root looking positive. That is a terrible shot to the first ball after drinks. Root didn't know what to do, tried to pull but in a sort of half-hearted way, and the ball cannoned straight into his pads. Root wandered off without waiting for the umpire. Horrible looking shot.

    Eng 51-1

If you're just joining us, stick the kettle on for us? You've missed Cook being dropped on 3 and 23, the second a terrible miss courtesy of Ashwin, after a breezy start from the England captain. Hameed looked solid in defence before a bouncer from Umesh caught his glove and ballooned up to gully. He departed for 9, replaced by a positive-looking Root.

Root registers England's tenth boundary of the morning with a little flick off the hips that beats two fielders. It's a quick outfield, which Root takes full advantage of with a drive that brings up England's fifty. And that'll be drinks.

The ball hasn't gripped in that first over from Jayant. It hasn't turned, it just skidded through.

  17. Eng 44-1published at 13 overs

Kohli is not currently the picture of happiness. He's thrown the ball to Jayant Yadav to give England their first taste of spin, perhaps suspecting that Ashwin's confidence isn't all that high at the minute. It's a good over, a bit of extra bounce surprising Cook, but he uses his bat and pad to block everything away.

A lucky morning for Cook; first he wins the toss and now he's been dropped on 3 and 23. The first chance was difficult but the one Ashwin fluffed? That should have been snaffled up. Meanwhile Root gets his innings underway by pulling a short, wide tempter from Umesh to the boundary. Ashwin again cheers his team-mates up by making a real meal of sliding to stop a gentle clip along the ground, and Root picks up another boundary.

That is the simplest of chances. It's straight in and out of Ashwin's hands. I don't know what Shami has to do to get a wicket.
