Chris Woakes strengthens the England batting and is a very handy player to have at number eight. It's very important he stays with Jonny Bairstow for the time remaining tonight.

Jadeja fires through another over as the shadows begin to lengthen on the pitch. We're very close to the new ball now, which will be a horrible test for Bairstow and Woakes against Shami and presumably Ashwin. They pinch a well-timed two off the final ball to keep things ticking over.

Tommy D: Didn't bother to set my alarm for work this morning, just turned on the wicket notifications and the BBC Sport app did the rest.

Little Furry Despot: The only batsman to get out to a bad ball is the green teenager - the so called "mature" batsmen should take note!

    Jayant 11-4-38-1

Jayant Yadav will replace his namesake Umesh as the floodlights begin to kick in. His first ball turns a smidge, and Bairstow guides it away for a single. He then has a quick word with his partner as Woakes tries to smash Jayant into the top tier and finds himself swinging at fresh air. Woakes checks himself, just as the run rate tips down to an oddly pleasing 2.99.

    Bairstow 73, Woakes 13

Kohli did say in the pre-match blurb that he wanted his side to get smarter with reviews. Jadeja bowls a no-ball, a slip of the hands that rolls to Bairstow, who briefly considers following it and smashing it along the ground. He reins himself in.

Drinks gone and Jadeja's struck Bairstow on the pad. It could be going down but Jadeja likes it, so Kohli makes the T-sign...

We heard from former England rugby union fly-half Rob Andrew during the tea interval on TMS, talking about his new role as chief executive of Sussex.

As we can see above, Andrew has cricket pedigree - he was a dual blue in rugby and cricket at Cambridge University between 1982 and 1984.

And, below, we see him taking part in a match last summer, representing the Rugby Football Union against the Rugby Writers...

Drinks have arrived on the pitch, which gives Kohli a chance to assemble the team and give them a quick lecture. The new ball will be available in four overs time.

I would have liked England to get a lot, lot more - they should have done - but 350 might end up being a competitive score. The pitch may blow up by days three and four. It might completely explode.

  12. Eng 230-6published at 76 overs

    Woakes 13, Bairstow 72

Woakes chases a short ball from Umesh that the keeper ends up collecting from just below his knee. That's a shot and a half though, a full-blooded cover drive that races through empty space and into the boundary rope. Kohli instantly reacts by putting a fielder right where the ball just went. I can never quite understand that. The chances of him hitting that exact same shot, in the exact same place, except a bit more aerially, must be minuscule.

Ashwin's dreadful day in the field continues. He tries to get down to cut off a Woakes push through mid-wicket but the ball ricochets off his boot. Woakes can steal another single, Ashwin ends up sprawled on the ground and Kohli looks highly unimpressed.

I think it's the role of Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid and Gareth Batty to just stay in while Jonny Bairstow is out there - allow him to score some runs.

  16. Eng 223-6published at 74 overs

    Bairstow 72, Woakes 6

An adorable kid in the crowd is waving an India flag that is at least double his size. In fact he's waving it so enthusiastically he's in danger of toppling over. Umesh Yadav will have a quick burst before the new ball and gets Woakes to chase at a wide one. Woakes rehearses the shot then, just as every batsman who misses the ball is apt to do, has a prod at the pitch.

Doug Woodcock: Why does Jason Roy never get a mention for Test call-ups? If Hales can get a chance, Roy certainly should.

Robert Stow: Lost count of the times I've checked the #bbccricket headlines this year to see "Bairstow leads England recovery" - what a superb player.

  18. Eng 221-6published at 73 overs

Ben Duckett comes sprinting out of the dressing room with drinks and a towel, both of which are gratefully snatched up by Bairstow. Kohli then takes a bit of time to examine the ball, which he reckons has gone out of shape. Umpire Erasmus pops it through his testing hoop, laughs and throws it back to Kohli. Carry on, fellas.

Bairstow is making batting look so easy. He has looked controlled against the spin and played some nice sweep shots. He has played straight against the seamers, getting his weight moving back towards the ball.

  20. Eng 221-6published at 72 overs

    Woakes 5, Bairstow 71

An almighty yell from Shami wakes up the crowd as he gets a ball to move in to Woakes' pads, but umpire Erasmus is unmoved. That didn't hit Woakes as high as I thought; according to the technology it would have been an umpire's call, the ball just been clipping the top of the stumps. Woakes does the sensible thing and gets off strike, leaving Bairstow to defend the rest of the over.
