There's a real calm confidence about Jennings' play. You don’t see many players playing the sweep shot. He’s played it on a few occasions. I see a team with Hameed and Jennings both in, with Root at four.

Wait, what's this? Cook coming down the track? He tries to loft the ball but mishits it and sends it low for four. This must be a good track. I could almost hear a bugle sound then.

Bless poor Haseeb Hameed. He was on his feet to clap Jennings' 50 but can only gentle tap the cast round his injured hand.

Ashwin draws an lbw shout against Cook first ball but it was clearly going down. Cook hits back with a lovely shot through midwicket for four followed by an equally strong cover drive to the rope. In keeping with the over, Ashwin hits back with a ball short of a length that draws another leading edge from Cook that drops safe. An eventful over also contains a sweep from Jennings for two to bring up his half-century.

Yadav is an orthodox spinner but I do think he gets more revolutions on the ball than Ashwin. Ashwin has a few more tricks and that can go either way. I'm surprised they haven't given Jadeja a bowl to both batsmen. He's has Cook out a few times playing across that front pad.

Oh, that's a brilliant ball from Jayant, who gets one to rip past the defensive prod from Jennings. Big revs. Jennings remains tantalisingly, nervously on 49.

I'm putting 550 for England, surely. They can't have any more collapses! Maybe I should go in the dressing room and tell them if you can't bat on that, then go home.

India's defensive field gifts Jennings another run as his back-foot push trickles to long-off. That moves him to 49. A last-ball drive from Cook adds two more to the total.

Jayant Yadav makes it spin from both ends. Jennings sweeps for two to move within touching distance of a debut fifty. It is not all plain sailing, though. Jayant's last ball spins sharply and beats the bat. Something to think about.

Such is Jennings' growing confidence, he is now monopolising strike. He has faced 76 to Cook's 44 balls. That probably hasn't done Cook any favours. The England skipper is a bit too eager to score off Ashwin, playing inside a turning ball that just beats off stump.

Jennings is a stroller. Cook is the same - they've got synchronised strolling going on at the minute.

Haseeb Hameed is here. Great effort from the lad. He must have been back on a plane before the anesthetic for his operation wore off. He's watching a man make a very good early shout to take his place in the side. Another lovely drive from Jennings punches the ball through the off side and past a diving fielder for four. The Indian field gets increasingly more defensive.

If you win the toss, you have to win the match. Especially when you're playing a team that, man for man, is the same team as you.

Jennings remains cocooned in his crease by the surrounding Indian field when Ashwin bowls. He consistently gets to the pitch of each delivery, two of which he mines for two runs each. He even confidently retains the strike with a final single.

"They'll get 500-plus," says Geoffrey on TMS.

"They should get 500-plus," qualifies Aggers.

Yadav is back. He has a challenge in front of him, though, because this is flatter than a streamrolled pancake. Jennings pulls out another cracking drive, right through extra cover for four. After being dropped on 0 and surviving an lbw review the young Durham opener has looked assured. Quick learner.

A quick shake of hands between the openers as Cook's single brings up the team 50. No smiles. There's a big job to do. Jennings continues to front up against Ashwin, cutting for two before keeping strike with a clip to square leg for a single.
