It's good to see the England side making the India captain look to his laurels and work things out. He's had it rather easy in the last two Tests.
Jennings 112 on England debut
Moeen 50, Cook 46, Stokes 25*
England slip from 230-2 to 249-5
Four wickets for Ashwin
India lead 2-0 in five-Test series

Umesh to bowl the last over before lunch. We haven't seen seam for a bit but it does pose a slight challenge to Root who inside edges a back-foot defensive shot. It is the only worry for England in an otherwise well-managed over.
One blot on England's copybook in a session that has seen them take early control. Cook's rash shot cannot detract from a superb Test bow from Keaton Jennings. He looks the part.

It doesn't look like a great deal can go wrong with Keaton Jennings' batting. It looks very simple.
Root 3, Jennings 64
Jadeja screams an appeal as he jigs backwards down the track. It came after a tentative Root shot that appeared to come out of the middle of the bat. There is no review, sensibly.
Jennings continues his assault with a fine sweep shot for four. He is showing supreme judgement now.

Jennings is the first England opener to make a fifty in his first Test innings since Alastair Cook in 2006.
Jayant practically trots to the crease for his delivery. It's almost pony-like. Jennings is the man on the charge, though, as he comes down and lofts the ball down the ground for a one-bounce four. Lovely stuff.

Of all the Test pitches, this is spinning the earliest. In the other games it has spun by the second or third day. It's a different colour soil - the colour of a gingerbread biscuit.

Russell Anderson: Anyone else getting the feeling it will be Jennings and Hameed opening in the summer...?
Akshay Mistry: You look for a half decent opener, then two come along at once. I fancy Jennings at 3 for the foreseeable future...
There is a patch of rough that Jadeja is targeting with just about every ball now to Jennings, bang on a length outside off. There is no rough for Root but the spinner still gets turn, beating the number three's bat with a fizzing delivery. Pressure back on the tourists now, all because of one rash shot from a man who should know better.

That was the fourth time Cook has been stumped in Test cricket, but the first time it has happened in the first innings.

Si Lomas: Absolute throwaway by Cook, what's the rush? Can still use feet without playing big shot, wear this pitch down and bat long.
Jennings brings up England's 100 with a gentle cut shot to the man at deep mid-wicket. Root is then off the mark with a whip to leg.

Ben Lovett: I'll take blame for that one...sorry folks, woke up, checked score, pleasantly surprised, turn on @bbctms, external first over, wicket.
Martin: So far we've lost a wicket for every 2 minutes that I've been listening.

It sounds faintly immoral: stumped on the first morning.
Joe Root is the new man. He has three men around him but the rest of the field appears set to allow him to get off the mark. Surely you wouldn't be so defensive after taking a wicket? Oh well, who am I to question Kohli? Root sees off his first three balls without scoring.

You don't see that often from Alastair Cook. It takes the footholes and spins sharply, but it's not often you see Alastair Cook dancing down, trying to hit the ball out of Mumbai. That's a real gift.
Cook st Patel b Jadeja 46 (Eng 99-1)
This is why you don't see Cook dance down the track. He's not very good at it. He gifts India their first wicket as he plays around the third ball of new bowler Ravi Jadeja's third delivery, giving wicketkeeper Patel a simple task. So much good work undone.
