  • India lead 2-0 in five-Test series

  1. Eng 133-1published at 36 overs

Jadeja gets through his overs ridiculously quickly. He's not quite found his rhythm yet. There's too much short stuff and Root can work the odd fuller delivery off his pads to keep the score ticking over. Jennings is staying on the defensive for the time being, content to play straight down the pitch.

England's 117-1 was their highest lunchtime score on day one of an overseas Test since 1964.

  3. Eng 131-1published at 35 overs

Of all the things India have done right in this series, their fielding has been such a let down. A poor throw ricochets off Ashwin's hand, causing him some discomfort, before Root takes advantage of a slow fielder to nab an extra run. Kohli looks unimpressed at slip.

India just need to squeeze a bit of pressure on England. They don't necessarily need to take wickets but they have to stop the four balls. Bowl it straight, bowl the length and vary your trajectory. Keep batsmen guessing.

  5. Eng 128-1published at 34 overs

    Root 14, Jennings 67

If England collapse on this, then they'll be forced to sit through a Geoffrey Boycott seminar on how to use your bat. Both Ashwin and Jadeja are starting to get some turn but this is a good pitch and England can't afford to throw away another toss. Too short from Jadeja, this, and Root responds with a delightful cover drive that beats a diving KL Rahul and flies away to the boundary.

  7. Eng 121-1published at 33 overs

Ashwin, sporting a trendy new 'do of shaved sides with a little bit on top, takes the next over and beats Jennings with a nice one that turns just past the outside edge. There's plenty of noise from around the bat. Jennings, slight smile on his face, looks nonplussed by all the fuss. He defends back down the pitch for the rest of the over.

That's boring. No more arguments about England's batting line-up for a while.

  9. Eng 120-1published at 32 overs

    Root 7, Jennings 66

Jadeja will continue, a solitary slip and short leg hovering under Root's nose. Kohli went very defensive, very early this morning. It was a good toss to win for sure but I'd still have liked to have seen him keep the field up, especially for Cook. Root and Jennings trade a couple of singles to get England started up again.

The players are back out. Keaton Jennings is shadow batting at the non-strikers, which means Joe Root will face the first over after lunch.

  11. What have you missed?published at 06:41 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2016

Just joining us? Alarm didn't go off? You've missed another mightily impressive debut by an England opener, with Keaton Jennings making an unbeaten 65.

Barring a tough chance he offered to gully before he had scored, the left-hander looked every inch a Test batsman. He shared an opening stand of 99 with Alastair Cook before the skipper was stumped - yes, stumped - for 45 shortly before lunch.

Jennings will resume alongside Joe Root, who is five not out, in a few moments' time.

Cheers, Dawkesy, and morning, folks. All gone rather well this morning, hasn't it? That's ignoring Cook's audition for Strictly Come Dancing when he came skipping down the pitch to Jadeja.

That's all from me for now. I'll take my sweater and leave you to face the testing right-arm over of Amy Lofthouse.

  15. Getting his Roots donepublished at 06:33 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2016

Sky are currently showing a pre-recorded interview with Joe Root, during which he is getting his hair cut. Bit weird. Presumably he only had a limited slot available.

Michael Atherton is also there. In the background. Getting a facial.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow, when Ian Ward talks to Chris Woakes as he's getting his nails done. David Lloyd in the back. Getting his eyebrows threaded.

It's been a tremendous morning of Test match cricket for the debutant. He looks like he has a great temperament. He has all the shots. Like we said about Haseeb Hameed, he looks like he has been out there for an number of Test matches already.

Cricket is set to introduce sendings-off for the first time next year, while the size of bats is to be limited.

Umpires will be given the power to eject players from a game for serious disciplinary breaches.

MCC World Cricket Committee member Ricky Ponting explained that sanctions needed to be implemented.

"We're talking about a significant change to lower-level cricket because it has got completely out of hand down there," the ex-Australia captain said.

It's been tremendous cricket to watch. There's been action, shots, dropped catches, a bit of tweak and spin, which is always good to see in Test cricket. We've seen quite a few go past the outside edge of the bat already and w're only 31 overs into the Test match.
