Here we go. Woakes goes short and Umesh hammers him through midwicket. A proper, good old fashioned slog. Moeen breaks the stumps as Umesh nabs a quick single but he's home, and Kumar's response is to launch Woakes back over his head for four. What a shot that is. Cook looks exactly how you'd think a man who has been stood in the baking sun for two days and will shortly be going to bat on a turning pitch would look. An edge that flies between slip and keeper and away for four brings about a wry smile from the England captain.

    Lead by 217

Kohli is hovering with the coaches and support staff, watching as Rashid gets through his 55th over. It's spinning regularly now, the ball turning across Umesh. Drinks come out, presumably with a message. Swing and swing hard, you'd assume.

  6. Kohli the record breakerpublished at 07:21 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2016

    Andrew Samson

    • Highest score by an India captain
    • Highest score by an Indian against England
    • Highest score by an Indian at the Wankhede Stadium
    • The 241 he added with Jayant Yadav is India's highest eighth-wicket stand in Tests
  7. Ind 615-9published at 180 overs

    Lead by 215

That was special from Kohli. As he walked off he turned and saluted the whole stadium, bat and helmet raised high above his head, as they applauded as one. What can you say about that innings? No declaration as of yet, so Umesh Yadav will join Kumar at the crease.

  8. 'We've seen something truly special'published at 07:19 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2016

    Sunil Gavaskar
Former India captain on BBC Test Match Special

This really has been an outstanding innings from an outstanding young player. He is only 28 and players tend to peak between 27 and 33, so imagine what he could be capable of. He came in to bat after the second ball of yesterday and after that he has taken India to a dominant position. From the word go everything was in the middle of the bat. It is one of the greatest double centuries you could ever hope to see. We've seen something truly special.

    Kohli c Anderson b Woakes 235 (Ind 615-9)

An utterly magnificent innings comes to an end. Kohli slaps a Woakes delivery towards deep cover and Anderson, running to his left, doesn't miss out. All the England team run over to congratulate Kohli as he departs to a standing ovation. Goosebumps.

The Monk 134: England have simply been at a village cricket standard in this series & the one against Bangladesh & it's hugely disappointing.

  11. dropped catch

Kumar dropped on 0published at 179 overs

    Ind 613-8

Kohli's going into supercharge mode. He chucks a drive at Rashid and the ball pops up off the outside edge, but falls to safety, before he misses a sweep at Rashid. Kumar ends the over by slapping a delivery to Cook at silly point. It goes quickly and Cook can't cling on. It'll go down as a drop but it was a tough one.

Kohli is doing to India what Kevin Pietersen did to India last time here. He won England that game.

This is the highest total at the Wankhede Stadium, beating West Indies' 604-6 declared against India in 1975.

  14. Ind 612-8published at 178 overs

Six! Oh that is superb from Kohli. Woakes bowls a slower ball, Kohli swings his arms and then stands back and admires as the ball sails into the stands, narrowly avoiding someone's umbrella. That was imperious. Woakes greets Bhuveneshwar Kumar with a bouncer, but the number ten sways under it. He just needs to stick around at one end, let Kohli play the shots.

hlc1221: Kohli has been supreme but this is some innings from a number 9 who has played 3 Tests. India have found a player in Jayant.

That delivery from Rashid spun some way, and Jayant just missed it, plain and simple. England celebrate with the appropriate amount of enthusiasm, which was not a lot. Some tired faces out there.

It is a nice wicket for Rashid and a nice stumping from Bairstow but that is a give away. He had had enough. It is almost impossible to hit it from the rough over extra cover. If he can do that he is a better man than me. But there is no criticism for that. He has played superbly. He has made India a much harder unit to bowl out.

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 176.3 overs

Jayant st Bairstow b Rashid 104 (Ind 605-8)

A wicket! I'd forgotten what they look like! Jayant comes down the pitch, trying to smash Rashid over cover, but he misses. Bairstow doesn't, cracking the bails off just as Jayant turns around. He walks off, bat tucked under his arm, an excellent day's work over.

Adil Rashid now has the most expensive figures by an England bowler in Tests against India. The record was held by James Anderson, who took 4-182 at The Oval in 2002.

    Kohli 224, Jayant 104

Send me in examples of when you've had a worse morning than England. I'll send them through to Alastair Cook, offer him a bit of Christmas cheer. Woakes will continue and Kohli drives him straight to the boundary for another four runs. England's shoulders, which were momentarily raised when they came back on the field, have slumped back down.
