It didn't look short enough to go back. Give the bowler credit - he has done him.

Cook lbw Jadeja 18 (Eng 43-2)

Gone. So very gone. That just looked out. Cook was back on his stumps, Jadeja struck him on the back pad and that always looked like hitting. Cook knew it too, a resigned look on his face as he walks off. The crowd crank up the noise again.

Cook has reviewed it anyway. Why not? It's such a pivotal wicket.

Cook's been given out! He's reviewed it after a chat with Root. Neither of them look confident. Here we go...

Now then. India go up for a catch off Root at short leg but he's missed the ball by a mile, Root then wanders out of his crease and short leg misses the stumps with the throw. Root got in a tangle there, trying to play across his pad, but he looks more assured a he pulls a short ball off Ashwin away for a single.

Jadeja fires through another over, and he gets Root looking a little edgy. A single brings Cook on strike and the captain edges between leg gully and the keeper to pick up another boundary. Cook turned it uneasily off his pads and Vijay stuck out a hand but he couldn't get far enough across. It didn't look pretty, but it'll count.

It is defence and attack playing spinners on dry pitches. When you first go in there are plenty of guys round the bat but that means there are gaps and you can score in a sensible manner.

    Cook 8, Root 21

Here he is, Ravichandran Ashwin. He spins the ball from hand to hand, taking measure of the pitch as Cook drives a full delivery firmly to cover. Ooh, don't do that, Alastair. Cook chips another full ball into the air and it flies past short leg, dropping just short of another advancing fielder. The batsmen pinch a single before Root sweeps and connects well enough for a couple.

It turned when Jadeja bowled it quicker. That is the answer.

Seven overs and we've got our first sighting of spin. Enter Jadeja. Root moves his feet to the second delivery and drives through the covers and away for four runs. Root looks much better to the spin when he gets his feet moving. He steps back to cut and just avoids getting an edge through to the keeper, before Jadeja spins a quicker ball past the outside edge. A cracker of a delivery that misses everything ends the over.

I hope all England supporters will now agree that winning the toss and making 400 does not guarantee a win. Having class players is a must.

Root settles back over his bat after a brief confab with the umpires. A lovely drive through point races away to the boundary and is greeted with near silence from the crowd. There's not much doing for Kumar, the early swing he found disappearing as Cook cuts him for another four.

There is something going on here between Joe Root and the umpires. I don't know if he is accusing the Indians of running on the wicket.

  17. Eng 13-1published at 6 overs

    Cook 3, Root 9

This is better from Umesh. Root is late on a couple of deliveries, expecting the short ball, so Umesh obliges and Root has to sway under an 89mph delivery. Kohli claps his hands at slip as Root wanders down for a word with the captain. A quick single keeps the score ticking over.

  18. Eng 12-1published at 5 overs

Kumar was momentarily held up there as Cook got irked by the Spider Cam. There's a bit of swing there for the bowler but it's too wide to tempt Cook. A full ball that Cook jabs his bat down on brings up a huge cloud of dust. Ashwin will be on soon, you'd think.

Yadav isn't getting much out of this surface. He needs more skid. It is just sitting up here.

The trumpets and horns are still blaring in the crowd, but it's not disturbing Cook or Root. Both batsman work Umesh for a couple of singles before Umesh bangs in a short ball that climbs up on Root. It hits the top of Root's bat and Root whips his hand away as he runs through. That'll sting.
