Jay: Allowing the Indian openers to score big to lull Kohli into being overconfident and getting out cheaply is as good a plan as any.

Parthiv is given four with a leg glance that appears to come off the pads, adding to Ball's anguish, but the makeshift opener soon completes his sixth Test fifty from 84 balls. Yes, worryingly, in addition to Pujara and Kohli, there is still Murali Vijay to return from injury. Not the first hour England would have wanted it is fair to say, and exactly 60 runs added. Time for a reflective drink.

India to reach England's total without losing a wicket. Thoughts?

What a shot this is from Rahul, a vicious sweep at Moeen that rockets to the boundary. We saw him nearly put his knee out when he made no contact with an attempted cut shot yesterday and after throwing the kitchen sink at this one too he is flexing a little. Retired hurt could be England's best chance of a breakthrough.

  5. Rain on the way in Brisbane?published at 04:54 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2016

It's lunch on day four of the day-night Test in Brisbane - with Pakistan on 131-2, chasing a theoretical 490 to beat Australia.

However, one glimmer of hope for the tourists is that the covers are on, as seen in Alison Mitchell's tweet below (app users may need to select 'View more' to see picture):

Ball strays wide and Rahul flays it away savagely through point for his fifth boundary. We have the customary India super fan with his body painted in national colours, joined today by a well built gentleman with luxuriant moustache in a silky floral one-piece number waving a scarf exuberantly, like Ronnie Barker in drag.

That ball turned and bounced. It took the shoulder of the bat, was in the air as it passed Stokes, but wasn't in his range. It's a glimmer of hope, but no more.

A change, with more spin in the form of Moeen Ali. Rahul clips the first ball away for two to record the hundred partnership from 175 balls, the first century opening stand for India in the last 32 innings. And there is still Pujara and Kohli to come. Gulp. Some turn from Moeen takes the shoulder of the bat but there is no chance as it flies short and wide of Stokes diving at slip.

Ball is neat and tidy, but not threatening. One slip and one gully in place in optimism rather than expectation. England need a Lord Flashheart in these circumstances, not a nice guy Eddie. Singles for both batsmen.

He likes to play his shots and doesn't hold back. He's very much a modern Indian opening batsman.

Lots of talk, and uncertainty, over the last couple of days about Moeen's batting and bowling. But let's show some respect for that beard (and that of his twin brother Hashim Amla-Ali). Unequivocal world class hirsutism. It's like an additional fielder. Cookie could position him at 3rd man so his beard covers gully. What about the best beard XI? Moustache Mohammed?

Notts seamer Jake Ball, after three overs for nine yesterday, comes into the attack after some crouching and stretching warm-up exercises like a polite and reserved version of the Haka., external He's up around 85mph and has two slips waiting optimistically, but his captain is looking pensive and no doubt wondering where a wicket is coming from.

It was speculated earlier that Parthiv Patel could spend this entire Test on the field if he were to carry his bat:

There are a few players who have been on the field for an entire Test match -  notably Taslim Arif of Pakistan who kept wicket for 211 overs against Australia in Faisalabad in 1980,, external then opened the batting and was 210 not out at the end of the game.

The one who was on for the most overs was South Africa's Jackie McGlew, against New Zealand at Wellington in 1953, external - he opened and made 255 not out in 174 overs, then fielded for 242.3 overs as NZ followed on.

For some reason the three fielders on the off side all change places, like a rather ponderous Morris dance, which will not do much for the over-rate. There are three slips for Broad but no hint of an edge as Rahul punches one off the back foot that is hauled in just short of the cover boundary, bringing him three.

I'd take Dawson off and get Moeen on to bowl to Parthiv. Swap it around until you find someone who creates a problem.

Rahul is clearly not going to let Dawson settle and thumps him over long-on for six more into a stand that is not open to the public. After some delay, the one steward seemingly in that part of the ground, is able to retrieve the ball. Dawson recovers to produce an accurate remainder of the over, with Jennings under the helmet at short cover in the eyeline of the batsmen, although with no obvious signs of causing him any anxiety.
