Broad's hands are up and then down on his knees in exasperation already - we might see that rather a lot today - as Rahul flicks one off middle stump out to deep mid-wicket for a single. One slip and a gully for the England seamer, who dons his orange-lensed white glasses and heads thoughtfully off to the outfield.

I'd be saying to the youngster [Dawson] "keep spinning it". I don't mind the batsman trying to hit over the top like that this early, as the ball could go straight up in the air.

The first four is swiftly followed by the first six as Rahul dances down the wicket to Dawson's opening delivery of the over and thumps it mercilessly back over the bowler's head for the maximum, measured off the bat - however they do that - at 128km per hour.

If people have to travel a long way to get here, park, and then have trouble getting in the ground, they're just going to watch it on TV - and then cricket has lost.

There's some sad reports coming in about people not being able to get into the ground. It's pretty disgraceful, really. Even with the reduced capacity, there are still thousands of empty seats to the left.

There is quite a lot of cloud around as Stuart Broad, with his hair neatly gelled back, takes up the attack, hoping for one of those magical spells. He is given an early warning by statuesque umpire Marais Erasmus and then driven down the ground by diminutive left-hander Parthiv for the first boundary of the day.

I don't agree with [having long-on back straight away]. I wouldn't give them a single this early in the morning. You want to get a wicket or two when you start out.

A fair amount for criticism for Cook's field settings yesterday. There is a slip and a silly point but both batsmen are able to collect singles.

Liam Dawson told me yesterday that "Vic Marks told me to make sure you get the fields you want when you're bowling". Is it possible for a commentator to be called into the match referee's office?!

Vic is now getting stick from Aggers and Ed for undermining the captain's authority...

Alastair Cook leads his players out to the centre for a huddle in the sunshine and with the increase of a few thousand decibels the Indian opening batsman follow. It will be Dawson to start proceedings.

England's seamers, Anderson in particular, need the ball to swing. Just for once, India's quick bowlers are faster than England, and when there's nothing happening, Kohli can ask them for four aggressive overs.

Vic is of course looking at the overall picture and is well aware Anderson is not playing in this match!

You'd expect India to out-bat England and bowl spin better in these conditions. You wouldn't expect India's fast bowlers to be more dangerous.

If Yadav can rough up Moeen Ali when he's 140 not out like he did yesterday, you'd think England could do that to India today.

There are still reports of thousands of people queuing outside the ground and even being hit with sticks. The BBC commentary team has also encountered problems - not by being hit with sticks - but with a rather austere sounding hierarchy and we will keep you informed of the latest developments there too.

The morning seems to be the best time to bowl so far in this Test. The challenge is, never mind getting Virat Kohli out, they've got to get him in first. It looked a better day to bat on the second day than the first.

England debutant Liam Dawson had a good day with the bat yesterday, making an unbeaten 66 and he bowled one maiden last night - in cricketing terms. The left-arm spinner has said he wants to be a genuine all-rounder, so let's see what he can do.

In Chennai there is more chance of getting an early night during a raucous Christmas party than England bowling out India cheaply but they have dismissed them for 204 once in the series, some time ago in the second Test. Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli both have two centuries and are still to come. Who is going to provide the magic with the ball for England?

On day four of the first Test between Australia and Pakistan, the pink ball day-night Test in Brisbane, the Aussies need a further eight wickets to wrap up victory and Pakistan - all out for 142 in their first innings - a rather less likely target of 490. They are 86-2 and you can keep up with that one here too.
