  1. 6 runs

    Eng 178-6published at 38 overs

Carlos Brathwaite is back into the attack. Smash! Chris Woakes drives a full-ish ball over long-off for a maximum. Brings up the 50 partnership.

A nice cut down to third-man, coupled with some good running, adds a couple more to the total. 10 off that over in total.

You need to get a wicket. You won't defend 225 if England bat all 50 overs. You will lose. You need to take wickets and Root is key. Young captains can be too conservative. Jason Holder tends to play a little bit too careful, in my opinion.

  3. Eng 168-6published at 37 overs

Another economical over from Mohammed but no wicket to show for it.

This pair have put on 44 runs now, Woakes proving what an asset he is to the side with both bat and ball.

There's a lot of huffing and puffing from the West Indies fielders.

Chris Woakes was lucky there. It was a nice bounce for the fielder too.

  5. Eng 165-6published at 36 overs

A direct hit and Root would have gone! Woakes dabs it into the covers and the single was never on. Lewis misses the stumps and England manage to get an overthrow run. Root had given up, in fact he was watching the ball rather than even attempting to ground his bat.

  6. Eng 163-6published at 35.3 overs

Woakes attempts to pull one from Holder but can only manage an inside edge which crashes straight into this thigh. But he does better next time, sets up his feet and hoicks it over to the leg-side for four.

It's such a shame Shannon Gabriel went off injured when he did. To have that spin at one end and then him coming in from the other at 90mph.

The sun is still shining on this picturesque ground as Jason Mohammed continues.

England look comfortable as they add three more to the total and Root goes into the 70's.

You feel the momentum is perhaps just about in England's favour with this partnership, but a wicket changes things.

Holder's line has been really good in this spell. He created really good pressure, just in terms of his line. He drew that false shot out of Woakes. You feel that England have so much time at the moment that it isn't an issue. With Shannon Gabriel off the field, the West Indies have to find a way to take wickets

  11. Eng 155-6published at 34 overs

A nice swivel on the back foot and pull to the square-leg boundary adds two more to Woakes' score. Good fielding from Kraigg Brathwaite. Woakes has looked pretty stable since coming in at number 8.

Joe Root then guides one just over the fielder at mid-off for a couple more.

Boy did he middle that one! Woakes has played patiently so far but he dances down the wicket and drives Mohammed over mid-off for four. That's what England needed. 150 is up. 75 needed from 17 overs.

Without that potency of Gabriel, the only way you can take wickets now is by applying pressure. Root looks uncomfortable after getting struck in the ribs. It might throw him off a bit.

  15. Gabriel suffers side strainpublished at 19:48 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March 2017

Shannon Gabriel will not bowl again today. He's been off the field for a while and he's picked up a side strain. He was excellent first up this morning.

Ouch! That hurt but Joe Root is a trooper. Jason Holder steams in with a short pitched ball which angles in and hits the England Test skipper just under the rib cage.

Woakes then tries to guide a bouncer down to third man but nearly gloves it to the keeper. Brilliant over from Holder, just the one conceded.

Root and Woakes exchange singles as they find the gaps. A good first over from Mohammed, not much turn but just three from it. The Windies need wickets.

    Thank you very much, Amy.

So we have a real game on now. West Indies introduce Jason Mohammed and his off break.
