Stokes is moving gingerly at best. He's a wonderful athlete, but he doesn't look in the peak of health. I'll be keeping an eye on him, but they wouldn't have played him if they weren't confident that he was fully fit.

  2. SA 84-1published at 15 overs

Alex Hales commits a dreadful misfield, diving over one at deep square leg to gift Quinton de Kock a boundary.

The keeper moves to 47 with another delicious shot, getting across to clip it through mid-wicket for four.

Feeling a bit flat out there from the hosts at the moment.

Can Adil Rashid inject some life into proceedings?

Stokes isn't bowling at any great pace but he's put the brakes on and conjured a wicket.

  4. SA 76-1published at 14 overs

A couple of wides in that over from Stokes, but he responded well, ending it with three straight dot balls.

Stokes walks off with a slight, but apparent limp.

  5. SA 75-1published at 13.3 overs

Sumptuous timing from De Kock to clip an over-pitched Stokes delivery through mid-wicket.

He follows with another punch down the ground but Adil Rashid does well, diving to his right to prevent back-to-back fours.

  6. SA 69-1published at 13 overs

Plunkett provides a bit of chin music to force Du Plessis to check his pull shot.

Another solid over from Plunkett until the final ball is punched down the ground for four.

    A cracking shot that.

  7. SA 62-1published at 12 overs

Ben Stokes in aggressive mood as he gets one through to thump Faf du Plessis in the stomach.

The South African number three recovers to pick up one off his pads, with De Kock adding another single.

The Mighty Mojo: In the same instant Ben Stokes proves why he shouldn't have played, and why he did.

  9. SA 60-1published at 11 overs

De Kock 32, Du Plessis 2

Cheers Steph. South Africa were very much on top until that breakthrough. They're still 13 runs ahead of England at the same stage but the hosts will feel a great deal better after that wicket.

Here's Liam Plunkett into the attack. A tidy first over, just four singles from it. De Kock drills the stumps with a drive off the final ball, saving a boundary.

  10. SA 56-1published at 10 overs

Yep, Stokes definitely not happy with the knee. The physio has been on, Stokes is stamping his foot. Faf du Plessis is the new man. Here's Jack Skelton...

Is he in a bit of knick or what? Ben Stokes has bowled a wide half-volley and Hashim Amla has battered it straight at Eoin Morgan. Golden arm.

This time! England have the breakthrough and it's that man Ben Stokes. It's a pretty loose delivery, matched by a poor shot from Hashim Amla. Wide, a drive to Eoin Morgan at extra cover. But is Stokes still struggling with that knee? He doesn't look thrilled, but that might just be because of the rank delivery.

That would've been an amazing catch.

  14. dropped catch

De Kock dropped on 28published at 9.1 overs

    SA 53-0

It would have been a worldie. Ben Stokes' first ball, belted back by De Kock. Stokes sticks out a hand, but can't hold on. De Kock dropped Stokes, so it's only fair.

Still very quiet in Southampton, the crowd almost waiting to be lifted by an England wicket. Jonny Bairstow is on the field for Liam Plunkett, so Plunkett will probably soon be getting a bowl. Big sunhat for JB - he has to be careful on days like today.

South Africa are right on top here and, as the sun comes out, they're going to fancy their chances more and more.

  17. SA 50-0published at 8 overs

The conditions no really show that South Africa made a decent call to chase. Sunshine, good pitch, a time to be batting. An Alex Hales hits the stumps at the non-striker's end, but Amla is home. Next delivery, De Kock pulls Ball for four. Batting looks a doddle at the moment.

Luke Dady: Chris Woakes is so important for this England team. There's not the same pressure on South Africa without him in the side.

  19. SA 40-0published at 7 overs

    Target 331

Wood continues to cause problems for Amla, this time an inside edge goes past the stumps. Southampton is quiet - so much so you can hear the shouts of individual spectators. Quinton de Kock looks very comfortable. Time for a change?

South Africa are favourites from here. Although 330 is a heck of a lot of runs. I just sense that the visitors are hurting after the first game. I think they were slightly embarrassed at Headingley and took England a bit lightly.
