Ball is again too short, with De Kock again gobbling up a cut shot for four. Are England quite good enough with the ball to win the Champions Trophy? Even when Chis Woakes comes back into the side. I just wonder if they'll come unstuck conceding a big one.

  2. SA 24-0published at 5 overs

    Target 331

Amla takes a single from the next ball he faces and looks pretty calm at the non-striker's end. A problem with the short ball was something he had to get over early in his career. Good, hostile over from Mark Wood.

I think it's just surprised Amla. It's a really well-directed bouncer and he's taken his eye off it for a second.

  4. SA 23-0published at 4.2 overs

Amla looks like he'll be OK. As soon as the delay was apparent, the DJ played Stevie Wonder's Superstitious. Is he under instruction to fill every gap with a tune?

  5. ouch!

    SA 23-0published at 4.2 overs

Ooooffff. Mark Wood has pinned Hashim Amla with a nasty one. A short ball, pacy and skiddy, Amla trying to sway out of the way but taking it flush on the grille. Nasty.

For England to win the Champions Trophy, their batsmen are going to have to fire. You can't afford one off-day with the bat because you pretty much lose one game in the tournament and you're out.

  7. SA 22-0published at 4 overs

    Target 331

Jake Ball asks the question when De Kock plays across his front pad, but an inside edge is easy to detect. Behind the stand, the ice cream man is making enough money for a holiday in the Maldives. When Ball gets too full, Amla biffs down the ground for four, a boundary greeted by unneccesary music. Why play it? You can't even get the whole song in.

The area England have struggled in the past year is that they've almost felt they have to get 350 as they don't take enough wickets. So a wicket-taking option like Mark Wood is important.

  9. SA 16-0published at 3 overs

    Target 331

Mark Wood begins bent over, then grows taller into his truncated run-up. Dark hair, stubble, a serious look at odds with his imaginary horse. Eoin Morgan throws as Hashim Amla pinches a single - would have been home. De Kock follows up with a handsome drive for four.

I had chicken bolognese for lunch. It was chicken with bolognese sauce on top.

  11. SA 11-0published at 2 overs

    Target 331

Lovely sun in the south now, an excellent time to be batting. Jake Ball shares takes the other new, erm, ball. Too short, too wide, De Kock cuts uppishly for four. Meanwhile, just beyond the stadium, a fox and some hunters play their own cricket match. I kid you not.

I've never seen a South Africa side field that badly. It wasn't just the dropped catches but the ground fielding too. There were no excuses.

  13. SA 5-0published at 1 over

    Target 331

Two slips for Wood, who struggled at Headingley and is already allowing Amla a clip off the hips for four. When he corrects the line, it's better, with a hint of swing. The pace is good too, up above 90mph.

Quinton de Kock takes guard, butter-fingers Hashim Amla is at the other end. Mark Wood has the ball.

    Here they come.

By the way, it's obviously a cracking day of sport, but is it possible for someone to get to both the Premiership and FA Cup finals?

The England players are about to step over the rope. Eoin Morgan is deep in conversation with Jake Ball. Ball is about a foot taller than his captain. Trevor Bayliss is wearing some John Lennon sunglasses as he hits catches.
