  1. new ball

New ballpublished at 18:03 British Summer Time 6 July 2017

    Eng 327-5 (Root 168, Moeen 50)

Rabada takes the new cherry and has two slips and a gully as he glides in from Nursery End, but the opening delivery is short and wide and Root, his sleeveless sweater still brilliant white, cuts it off the back foot for his 22nd four. The 23rd soon follows with a dashing square drive that flies over backward point.

Moeen has played a very important role like he has on so many occasions for England.

He struggled to get off the mark but since has played extremely well.

He is a good player to have coming in at number seven.

  3. Eng 319-5published at 80 overs

    Root 160, Moeen 50

A suitably stylish flick off the hip from Moeen at Bavuma brings the left-hander his 10th fifty in his 38th Test. It has come from 81 balls and there have been four glorious boundaries. Reserve official Rob Bailey trots down the famous Pavilion steps with the new ball. This should have been the final over but we have an extra half an hour to use.

Ex-South Africa captain on BBC Test Match Special

South Africa have not been tactically on the money post-lunch. Why not get Morne Morkel into the attack to break this partnership before the new ball is due? They are thinking the new ball is the answer and not making decisions based on what's currently in front of them.

  5. Eng 314-5published at 17:55 British Summer Time 6 July 2017

    Root 159, Moeen 46

The singles continue with ease and Maharaj will be looking at a 150 of his own before long, his 22 overs have gone for 107. One over until the new ball is due.

Did you think you were seeing things? A left-arm spinner bowling a no ball? Here it is again.

  7. Eng 310-5published at 17:52 British Summer Time 6 July 2017

    Root 157, Moeen 44

Singles for both batsmen against Bavuma. All manner of headgear in the crowd. The panama remains the hat of choice for the Lord's faithful but we have a white handkerchief knotted in all four corners, redolent of the English seaside and there is an MCC member with an effort fashioned out of his daily newspaper. It's not the Daily Star, that's for sure.

Will Moulton‏: Is Moeen the most underrated player in this team? Stats aren't great but always performs when required - proper pressure player.

  9. Eng 308-5published at 17:49 British Summer Time 6 July 2017

    Root 156, Moeen 43

Another misfield, this time from the young and athletic Rabada at square cover, so Root can scamper through for two. Ragged from South Africa, some might even say "Village", the well-known derogatory cricketing term.

Dave Wood‏: How on earth can a left-arm spinner overstep? Shocking.

  11. Eng 301-5published at 17:46 British Summer Time 6 July 2017

    Root 152, Moeen 40

The England batsmen keep compiling the singles against the modest medium pace of Bavuma and the 300 comes up, quite a recovery from 76-4.

No-balls are becoming harder to forgive from quicker bowlers, but there's no sympathy for a spinner.

  13. 150 runs

150 for Rootpublished at 17:40 British Summer Time 6 July 2017

And the captain duly reaches 150 for the sixth time in Test cricket.

  15. wicket

Root out off no ballpublished at 17:39 British Summer Time 6 July 2017

Incredible scenes. Not that Maharaj has turned one past the bat of Root but that the spinner has been called for a no ball. Root was a mile out of his ground as De Kock took the bails off at the second attempt, but the spinner's foot was not behind the line. A third reprieve for Root.

  16. Eng 294-5published at 17:37 British Summer Time 6 July 2017

    Root 149, Moeen 37

Root nonchalantly glances a single off his pads from the final ball of Bavuma's over and will keep the strike, needing one more for his 150.

Scared to death of putting the mockers on this innings, but I think we are watching the best English batsman in living memory.

  18. Eng 292-5published at 17:34 British Summer Time 6 July 2017

    Root 148, Moeen 36

Root continues to profit with the sweep off Maharaj, the 11th conceded by the slow left-armer, who has also been dispatched for two sixes. The England captain passes 1,000 Test runs at Lord's in only his ninth match

  19. Eng 286-5published at 17:31 British Summer Time 6 July 2017

    Root 143, Moeen 35

The diminutive figure of Temba Bavuma, who scored that fabulous century against England at Cape Town in January 2016, trots in for some gentle medium pace from the Pavilion End. Australia tailender Josh Hazlewood is his only Test victim to date and there is not much chance of that changing in this over.
