A rather hoarse England captain Joe Root, unbeaten on 184, talking to Sky Sports:

"I rode my luck a but early on fell into place and I managed to capitalise on it. I woke up about 7 played with the youngster for a bit (his young son Alfred), had some brekkie and came here about 9.15 to have a hit. They bowled very well early on and I couldn't get my feet moving but credit to Stokesy and Moeen for the way they played and hopefully we can come back tomorrow and post a really big score.

"It's a nice start, that's all it is, we have to kick on and the good sign for us moving forward is it looks like the surface is a bit dented so we will be in the game with our seamers."

South Africa were disheveled and ill-disciplined. Their body language has been poor and I have not seen a South Africa team look like it is the end of a tour.

There wasn't an energy about them or a positive attitude and the overrate was appalling.

Rabada had an off day and was a little too wide. Morkel is fragile. When he got the Ballance wicket I thought 'this is it' and he was wayward.

Philander was the pick of the bowlers and the rest of them all had an off day backed up with the fielding.

The last four England captains have scored 100s in their first match as captain but I don't remember an innings taking the team into such a position of strength from a position of weakness.

He batted like Joe Root and that is the most important thing.

Ben Henderson: Today shows why Test cricket is the ultimate form. You don't get the same ebb and flow in the other games. Utterly absorbing

The Patio Cricketers: Brilliant stuff from #Rooooootttttttttt England in a fantastic position after day one.

Dave Wood: Fine start to captains Root's tenure. Captain's knock & a run rate over 4 despite a shocking over rate form SA.

It was a terrible start for England having won the toss. It seemed like a repeat of the last time we saw them against South Africa at Lord's in the one-day international in May when they slipped to 20-6 and were all out for 153.

Today they were 76-4 when Jonny Bairstow was out in the 23rd over and reached lunch at 82-4. But the second two sessions of the day produced 275 runs in 62 overs for the loss of only one wicket.

Adam Hawker: Joe Root runs between the wickets on 150 like he's just come in a T20 game. Even Boycott would struggle to run him out.

Felix Quantrill: Can we just appreciate that Joe Root has been batting all day today, WITH A JUMPER ON.

Arjun Sohanpal: Test match cricket is the best. Start of day - misery. End of day - joy! Best form of cricket there is.

It has been Root's day and England's day from lunch onwards.

He was a bit nervous at the beginning, the occasion got the better of him when he played one or two iffy shots but quite rightly he is getting a warm round of applause.

    Eng 357-5 (Root 184, Moeen 61)

There are a few looking worse for wear at the end of a long day, in the crowd, in the field and, in all truth, at the keyboard. Even with the extra half an hour we are three overs short. But what an innings we have seen from Joe Root and the crowd rise to applaud him from the arena, 184 from 227 balls with 26 fours and a six, terrific stuff.

Jonny Brook: England certainly found their MoJoe in this final session today. Game changing partnership!

Rob Meech: This is a masterclass in batting and stamping his authority on his team. Take a bow, Joe Root

Root has faced 219 deliveries but he is still able to play one of the shots of the day, almost exactly seven hours after coming to the crease, a forcing punch off the back foot off Philander that rockets over the rope. Maybe only one more over today, the tourists are not going to be in any hurry, that's for sure.

Jez Harper: Great to see the run rate high too, similar to the mid 2000s. In those days 440 all out from 100 overs was par vs Aussies.

There are a few dark clouds building up behind the Media Centre but I don't think we will have a stoppage in the last few minutes. Rabada strays again and is cut sumptuously to the cover boundary by Moeen.

Golden Boy Joe has a record in his sights. It's a fabulous one but I doubt that he knows about it. He is currently the fourth highest scoring batsman on captaincy debut. Graham Dowling of New Zealand holds the record with 239 against India in 1968. Even Joe is not going to be able to do it tonight, we only have 13 minutes remaining.

The new ball has done more for the scoring rate than the wickets column and Root collects boundaries on both sides of the wicket as Rabada strays with both his line and length.

Philander shares the new ball and he was the outstanding bowler this morning, taking 3-25 in his first seven overs. A wristy clip from Moeen is hauled in by Rabada on the boundary rope, a rare moment of good fielding from the South Africans in the session, which has so far produced 147 runs.

Joe Root now has the second most runs by a captain in his first day as captain. He has just gone past Clive Lloyd and is behind Clem Hill.
