Summary

  • Philander and Morris came together at 235-6

  • Seventh Test fifty for Philander

  • Amla (78) and De Kock (68) put on 113 together

  • Three wickets for Broad, two for Stokes

  • Milestones: Anderson takes 300th wicket in England & Amla brings up 8,000 Test runs

  1. SA 173-2published at 50 overs

    Amla 60 De Kock 67

Another cry of catch as an edge from De Kock goes wide of the diving Jimmy Anderson at gully.

Root jumps up in the air in anticipation but England can do nothing as the ball runs away for four.

Stuart Broad has a word with bowler Ben Stokes and suggests a field change. Stokes likes the idea. Second slip moves to a second gully. What's that saying about stable doors and horses?

  2. 100 runs

100 partnership for De Kock and Amlapublished at 49 overs

And there is the century partnership for these two.

An easy push for three also sees De Kock overtake Amla in the scoring despite having faced nearly half as many balls.

I don't want to get twitchy too soon but England need a wicket.

    Matt Benton‏: Best shot? Flintoff's eyes-closed hook/pulls for six, can't beat it.

Duncan Ward‏: Best shot in cricket is a Mahela Jayawardene late cut. Nobody makes such a difficult shot look so easy.

Daniel Davies: Eoin Morgan's reverse sweeps. Unorthodox but fantastic.

Kumar Sangakkara's cut is another for the list in my opinion.

  4. SA 165-2published at 48 overs

    Amla 60 De Kock 59

That's the first error in a long time from De Kock has he inside edges Stokes down to fine leg for four.

Now he's reverted back to type. You'd think Stokes was bowling at 70mph with the ease he finds the rope with this shot. The South African just waits and waits on the back foot before swatting the ball in front of square for four.

This partnership is now into the 90s. Here's the chance England missed to break it...

Eddie F: I have to admit that I much preferred the SA team with JP Duminy at 4.

De Kock has come out and played beautifully. He's the type of player you want to watch bat, whether you're English or South African.

  7. 50 runs

Half century for De Kockpublished at 47 overs

    SA 156-2

Easy as you like for De Kock as he takes a step down and clips the ball to long on to bring up his half century.

It has come off just 59 deliveries. He has looked very good.

  8. SA 153-2published at 46 overs

    Amla 59 De Kock 48

That's the third picture of a bar from Stephan today. A theme developing?

Unlike the morning session and just after lunch the sun is out and this very much looks a day for batting now. De Kock and Amla are looking comfortable and Stokes not particularly threatening.

De Kock cuts for his fifth four.

Mobeen Ahmad Tahir: Lara's pulls, Dhoni's helicopters, Sachin's defensive punch boundaries, Saeed Anwar's cuts......it's a beautiful game.

Jonny Mango: Kevin Pietersen's front foot cover drive would always give me the fizz.

Andy Barton‏: Robin Smith's square cut.

  11. SA 146-2published at 45 overs

    Amla 58 De Kock 42

Watchful start from Amla as Moeen tosses the ball up outside off stump. Mo then gets one badly wrong as he bowls a full toss that Amla paddles for one. There is no turn and as a result his latest ball to De Kock skids on down the leg side and De Kock picks up three.

Good footwork on the rope from Liam Dawson to prevent the boundary.

I can't believe England didn't turn to Moeen Ali earlier than this. His confidence is up and he was a matchwinner at Lord's.

And as if by magic here he is. Moeen Ali into the attack.

Ben Stokes' return to the attack could have brought a wicket in the last over but this is a little puzzling.

We're still yet to see Moeen Ali bowl a ball despite him spinning England to victory in the last match. You wonder whether England have backed themselves into a corner with this Dawson first, Moeen second talk.

Stokes tests out Jonny Bairstow's glove work with a full ball way down the leg side and the wicketkeeper dives full length and gets there. Stokes gives him a cheeky smile.

Matty Bannond‏: Mike Atherton's back-foot defensive, with both feet off the floor.

Ben Gardner‏: Pains me to say it but surely Ricky Ponting's pull shot as well?

George Collen: James Anderson's pull over cow corner from last Test was good as any Ian Bell cover drive!

  16. SA 140-2published at 43 overs

    Amla 56 De Kock 38

That could be a big miss for England. Amla is looking in good nick, bringing up 50 with a six off Dawson earlier on (see below).

Cook didn't seem to get his hands out in front of him and as a result had to pick the ball up right off the turf.

Just a single from Wood's latest over.

It just about carried. He managed to get his fingers under the ball. It would have been a difficult catch but I've seen him take those before.

  18. dropped catch

Amla dropped on 56published at 42 overs

The Liam Dawson trial is done and Ben Stokes is back into the attack.

Edged! Is that a drop? I think yes. Amla drives and the ball is dying on Cook at first slip but I think that carried.

    A fingertip cruncher.

Alex Maynard: Ian Bell's late cut - the hardest shot in the game made to look the easiest.

A couple of frustrating dismissals as well though I remember.

  20. SA 137-2published at 41 overs

    Amla 55 De Kock 36

Jimmy Anderson is almost the old statesman in this England team but he still looks happy to throw himself around in the field, diving well to prevent De Kock picking up another four.

De Kock shows the easy pace of this pitch by trying to work the ball into the leg side off Wood at the top of the bounce.

A maiden for Wood. Good for the quick and for England after De Kock stepped on the pedal a couple of overs ago.
