Mark Wood back into the fray. He furiously shines the ball on his trousers midway through the over, and then sees Temba Bavuma almost chop on to his stumps with an attempted cut.

Wood has head in his hands at the end of the over, though, as Bavuma pushes at full ball and the it races through the vacant third man region for four.

There was more than a hint of away swing which will keep him interested.

Stuart Broad has dismissed Hashim Amla more than any other bowler in Test cricket now. He's removed him eight times. Mitchell Johnson did so seven times.

Stuart Broad claimed the key wicket of Hashim Amla and here's a video clip of how he did it, with a short ball caught in the deep by Mark Wood.

    Du Plessis 17 Bavuma 5

Faf du Plessis has started to find some rhythm at the crease. Off the back foot he cracks James Anderson's first delivery for four through the covers. Then later in the over he whips the ball of his legs through mid-wicket for another boundary.

The South Africa captain attempting to stamp his authority in the remainder of the day.

Temba Bavuma, like Ajinkya Rahane, has a technique which leaves little room for something to go wrong.

  6. SA 204-4published at 61 overs

Stuart Broad sends down a short-ish ball to Temba Bavuma, but the diminutive batsman is quickly over the top of it and efficiently pulls it to the boundary for four.

Thanks for that Stephan. After sending us no less than four updates of bars, it's rather fitting place for you to have a little rest to get some composure.

Love this. One of the greatest cricketers of all time has his name given to something as mundane as a waiting area.

Thanks Matt, everything is finely poised at Trent Bridge. It promises to be an intriguing finish to the day. A couple more wickets and England will feel they have the upper hand heading into the weekend. South Africa dig in, however, and they will feel they have a platform to kick on.

It won't be easy going from the Proteas from here until stumps, though. James Anderson and Stuart Broad have the bit between their teeth.

    Du Plessis 2 Bavuma 0

The crowd know that was a big moment. They're ooooohing and aaaaahing as Broad comes in to new man Temba Bavuma.

The replays show the dismay on Hashim Amla's face when he realised what he'd done there.

Two new men at the crease. A new man in the live texting chair. Here's Timothy Abraham.

Huge wicket for England! Amla has fallen for the sucker-punch.

    Amla c Wood b Broad 78 (SA 194-4)

That's a horrible way to get out.

Hashim Amla has threatened to do this all day and South Africa's main man has hooked straight to Mark Wood at fine leg.

Two wickets in half an hour for Broad after tea. The two batsmen who were in are now out.

  13. SA 193-3published at 58 overs

    Amla 78 Du Plessis 1

That's just fantastic. An on drive from Hashim Amla races to the fence. No need to run for that.

And another! This time it is a cut but the same result. Sky point out on the TV coverage that Amla has only been dismissed by Jimmy Anderson twice in his career and averages way over 100 against him. For now the South African is liking what is coming his way.

Dave in Whitley Bay: Sir Geoffrey Boycott's forward defensive. Worked perfectly so many times.

Tom Caston: I don't think I've ever seen a shot as good as Kumar Sangakkara's check drive for six over cover yesterday...! Just incredible!

After 14 blocks and leaves Faf du Plessis gets off the mark with a clip off his toes to square leg for a single. Hashim Amla has been well wrapped up in the big jumper all day but Du Plessis isn't a fan. He gets the poor sub to run out and take his knitwear back to the dressing room. In for the long haul?

First runs after tea and you could say it was worth the wait. Another drive from Amla.

Jimmy is annoyed he's let his man release a bit of pressure.

Du Plessis is going to try and play himself in. Block, block, block, leave.

It has clouded over and is nipping around again. Three maidens in a row.

In the early days of his reign as captain, Joe Root finds his tactics under the microscope. The first two sessions today haven't been brilliant - the belated use of Moeen, the wasting of the two reviews. However, give one back to the skipper for that wicket of Quenton de Kock. Stuart Broad had bowled from the Pavilion End all day (the same end he took his 8-15 against Australia). One delivery after being switched, he'd bagged De Kock.
