Last week Joe Root couldn’t do anything wrong but here there have been questions asked tactically and the team hasn’t responded. The pressure is always on the captain but the team have to look at themselves.

I am speechless. I didn’t expect England to get anything out of the game after the first innings but I did expect them to fight today and be batting tomorrow. Don’t just fall in a heap.

  2. 'We have to move on and learn quickly'published at 15:25 British Summer Time 17 July 2017

More from Joe Root on Test Match Special: "It is disappointing. The most important thing is we learn from it. The other day in the first innings the conditions suited bowling. We didn’t act quickly enough and were always behind in the game.

"The plan was to go and make big runs and to be in a position where we were still in with a chance of winning at the end of the day. It is very disappointing that we lost the wickets as we did. We have to move on and learn quickly."

For Root there are two ways to go about it. You either give them an absolute roasting, give them a right telling off, or let the dust settle and gather them tomorrow.

It will be quite an awkward dressing room. They have let themselves down and a lot of people down.

  4. 'A tough week'published at 15:23 British Summer Time 17 July 2017

England captain Joe Root: "It has been a tough week. We weren't good enough with the bat for the whole game. We prepared very well and had two good practice days.

"We didn't assess the situation quickly enough and have to learn very quickly."

Bowser: Pathetic, disgraceful and horrible batting. Utterly ridiculous. Players should be ashamed.

Neil Farrington: Some cricket teams are dubbed The Invincibles. We are The Invertebrates.

Choose toast: We are gonna get the standard "the boys are hurting in there" and "he just goes out and plays his natural game". Both nonsense.

That is one of the worst batting collapses I have seen. These are perfect conditions.

We're still waiting to hear from the two captains. In the meantime, here is the winning moment as South Africa level this series.

There is talk about changes but are there better players? Do they need another batter?

The top order have been found wanting and Ballance and Jennings look technically like they will continue to be found wanting. Root has decisions to make.

If the middle order is going to play luxury cricket then they can't be three down.

Ben Harrison: I'd bring Hameed back into the Test team. 59* in last innings with a broken hand is a better guide to his ability than county form.

Ashley: Wouldn't mind defeat so much if one or two guys really fought hard, but England are all too good at meek 4th innings surrender.

Francis Edwards: Starc, Cummins and Pattinson all delighted that Root looks to struggle against pace, all 3 absolutely rapid compared to Morris.

It has been a very commanding fightback from South Africa.

There was lots of doubt, they looked soft at Lord's but they have come back here and fought hard.

They batted first in tough conditions, bowled well and took advantage of England's champagne cricket.

Anderson c de Kock b Olivier (Eng 133 all out)

Jimmy comes in, Jimmy goes out. That's what it's all about. It's catching practice as Anderson almost guides one to de Kock behind the stumps.

South Africa win by 340 runs. A thrashing.

The South African team are happy for Olivier. It was a nice short ball, angling in to the throat.

I can get the early train back to London. I can't believe what is going on here.

  15. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 44.1 overs

    Wood c Morris b Olivier (Eng 133-9)

Edged, caught at gully, Wood gone for a golden. Duanne Olivier comes back into the attack and strikes with his first ball.

Graeme Smith says you have to laugh, but you don't have to, you do what you want. Cry if you want. This England batting display has just been woeful.

    Broad c Morkel b Maharaj 5 (Eng 133-8)

Slog-sweep by the left-handed Broad, it goes high but not wide enough and it is an easy catch at deep mid-wicket by Morne Morkel. Two more to go.

Anyone got any decent plans tomorrow?

I would be looking to make a change of bowling. With Dawson and Broad it might be time for Chris Morris' X-Factor. We both know Broad is relieved to be facing the pace of Philander.

  19. Eng 130-7published at 43 overs

    Dawson 4, Broad 4

Broad shuffles across his stumps and slashes at a wide one from Philander, sending it a foot or so over point for four. He then gets on his tip toes and drives through the off, fielded brilliantly by Kuhn at mid-off.

An in-swinging yorker to end the over, dug out well by Broad.

Michael Davis: Frankly this is embarrassing. Can we pick test cricketers instead of bish bash guys and all rounders. It's not even a game

Martin Smith: 20-20 cricket has its place, but sometimes attritional cricket is needed. Protect your stumps & stay in. Let bowler work instead

Rob Meech: England's batting has been dreadful for ages - this Test shouldn't surprise people. If Root fails, we fail - it's simple
