Dawson looking more solid in the middle than many of England top order today. He sees off Maharaj with some front and back foot defensive shots, coupled with leaving a few to go by.

How many England changes will we see for the next Test? You've tweeted and texted in some brilliant suggestions today.

It has been easier than I was expecting.

I thought England would have learnt from the first innings but they haven't.

Cook and Root got good deliveries. I think it is such a cop out to say 'this is how I play'.

  3. Eng 125-7published at 41 overs

Liam Dawson and Stuart Broad, can they knock off the remaining 348 runs to win? I jest.

Highlights of today's play won't make great viewing for England fans, some of the dismissals have been so, so soft.

That is an unbelievably good catch from Vernon Philander.

To move your legs out of the way and take the catch - it is a fabulous piece of work.

    He made it look routine.

    WICKETpublished at 40.3 overs

    Stokes c and b Philander 18 (Eng 126-7)

Stokes goes and with him, you'd imagine, so does any hope of England playing another session in this match. Stokes, out of his crease again, pushes one straight back to the South African who takes a terrific catch, hands down low below waist height. He chucks the ball in the air and walks towards the England batsman in celebration.

  6. Eng 123-6published at 40 overs

Liam Dawson the new man in. Nearly chips one up towards short cover.

Camera pans to Joe Root pacing on the balcony, taking a sip of drink from a blue mug. Looks deflated.

After getting away with the caught behind and the run out chance, he has just swept to the man waiting for the catch. This is going from bad to worse.

  8. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 39.3 overs

    Moeen c Kuhn b Maharaj 27 (Eng 122-6)

    But that is out.

Again it looks horrible. A moment after surviving on review Moeen sweeps in the air straight to square leg. The trap was set and Kuhn didn't have to move an inch.

Trent Bridge falls into stunned silence.

  9. Not outpublished at 39.1 overs

Decision reversed. There was a little squiggle on Ultraedge, but it didn't seem to correlate with the timing of the ball going past the bat. South Africa look bemused, they were convinced it was out. Mind you, Moeen took no time at all in reviewing it.

  10. Umpire reviewpublished at 39.1 overs

Moeen has nicked Maharaj and it's been grabbed behind the stumps. He's gone. Or has he? He's reviewed it straight away.

Ben Stokes played that bouncer well. He's not bothered if Philander bounces him. It's like an ego competition.

Ben Stokes is batting way out of his crease and getting a big stride in too. That's what you need to do against Vernon Philander. And let the umpire know you're doing it too!

  13. Eng 120-5published at 39 overs

Change in the bowling as Vernon Philander is brought back into the attack. Stokes, already batting out of his crease, opts to keep walking down the wicket getting over the ball. Philander counters that with a bouncer.

    Maiden over.

Rory Humphrey: Time for Liam Livingstone to be given a go in Test cricket. Can bat at 3 or 4. Ballance isn't good enough for Test cricket.

Gamer Pauly: Can't believe this is the same England cricket team that beat South Africa in the first Test, they are just like the football team.

Tom Davies: Not sure what's more of a threat to Ashes enjoyment, the Australian pay dispute or our top seven batsmen

  15. Eng 120-5published at 38 overs

A gentle push into the off by Moeen and Morkel, fresh off conceding two boundaries to the England batsman, dives over the ball in a somewhat funny manner and it trickles through for a boundary.

Maharaj has the look of a man who is content in bowling some long spells this afternoon.

Of the five wickets to fall, the two which concern me the most are those of Keaton Jennings and Gary Ballance. Both received good deliveries but they knew what the bowler was trying to do and one was bowled and the other was lbw, missing the ball by five inches They're both in terrible nick.

  17. Eng 115-4published at 37 overs

    Stokes 16, Moeen 21

He carries on where he left off in that last over. Moeen finds the boundary rope (or the boundary foam) with a not-so-lovely looking shot which finds the outside edge and runs through past backward point.

He drives through the covers, albeit slightly on the up, for another four. Morkel doesn't look too pleased.

Is there a reason that Haseeb Hameed has been dropped after showing more application than most in India? He wouldn't have thrown his wicket away so easily that is for sure!

    Ben, Norwich

Yes, Ben. He averages 19.45 in the County Championship this season with a top score of 48.

  19. Eng 107-5published at 36 overs

Here we go! Moeen is off the mark with a four, followed by a four, followed by a four. That's woken up the England fans!

Three lovely looking shots, a textbook sweep as Moeen gets low and drags the ball square, a glorious drive through the covers and then another sweep which goes past short fine leg.

Moeen on the attack. Single off the last ball of the over and he keeps the strike.

Diabolical display.....again. 12 batting collapses in 18 Test match innings. This side simply do not show any fight or application when up against it. Serious problems in the top order have never been properly addressed. What are you going to do about it Bayliss?!
