Concluding our video review of the day, England were then held up for a long while by Temba Bavuma and Kagiso Rabada - while poor light forced them to turn to spin for a few overs.

Take a look at a boundary from Rabada (who, like the rest of the lower order, was batting a position higher than normal because of Vernon Philander's illness)- before he eventually fell to Stuart Broad.

With Toby Roland-Jones he hit that six off the bat handle and got a few runs so you feel you have contributed already. He bowled well but the conditions were absolutely perfect, I don't think he will ever get better ones, the pitch was doing plenty. The wicket of Hashim Amla was an absolute pearler and you can savour that. He is a batsman that always makes it difficult to get him out.

The wickets continued to flow as captain Faf du Plessis was lbw offering no shot to James Anderson, while Morris and Maharaj fell to leave the Proteas 61-7.

It was a dream debut for Toby Roland-Jones - let's take a look at those four wickets.

England's Toby Roland-Jones on TMS: "It was a pretty special day, we wanted to push ourselves as high as possible in some testing conditions. There were still some nerves at the top of the mark, but it always helps when you've got guys like Jimmy and Stuart who guided me through the opening few overs, and I was on adrenaline after that. Particularly in the context of the game, we stand here on day two in a pretty strong position. The Amla wicket was probably the best of the bunch, with all that he's done in the game."

England batted yesterday in similar conditions where the ball was moving around but they applied themselves. Bairstow looked in nice form, the batting is so long. I've not understood the first two Tests where they played Liam Dawson and it weakened the batting. They earned the right to play today. Stokes has played some real quality innings but I don't remember seeing him batting in such a mature way, to leave so many balls and wait for a straight one or a short one. It was full of determination and the way England batted in the first innings is exactly the way I expect to see them bat on a regular basis.

With only last man James Anderson for company, Ben Stokes then took charge, hitting three successive sixes - the second of which brought up his century.

The day belonged to Toby Roland-Jones, who enjoyed a batting cameo which brought him 25 from 25 balls, including a six off the bat handle.

Let's look back at some of the highlights of the day. Alastair Cook fell for 88, but Ben Stokes then came into his own - after gritting out the hard yards, he soon began pounding the boundaries.

Today has been such a good day for England but it was on the foundations of the way they played yesterday. Cook showed the way yesterday against a quality attack and Ben Stokes earned the right to get the conditions in his favour. The way he brought up his century with three successive sixes was magnificent, a great spectacle. England had perfect conditions for seam bowling, they didn't start that well but all of a sudden Toby Roland-Jones got the ball in hand.

So, here's the situation - South Africa trail by 227, so need 28 more to avoid the follow-on. And who knows - depending on those hospital tests, it's possible that Vernon Philander could be well enough to bat tomorrow.

Those who have paid through the gates today may be disappointed that the sides are a full eight overs short of what they should have bowled today. (Cricinfo even suggests the figure is 10).
