    Bavuma 10, Rabada 1

Anderson has three slips and a gully in place for Rabada, who prods and misses outside off stump - in fact, he fails to lay bat on ball for any of the first four balls of the over. The fifth takes the edge but reaches Stokes at gully on the first bounce, and Jimmy joins up the dots for a maiden over with another one past the left-hander's edge.

Six wickets have fallen for 50 runs in this session. Just let that sink in.

England scrapped and scrapped and conditions were a bit easier for batting this morning with no Philander with the second new ball. Then the clouds got a bit lower with some mizzle. It is becoming a common trend when teams go out to bat against a decent score they fall in a heap. There have been some good balls, it has been very tricky but you could certainly survive and scrap.

Need 86 more to avoid follow-on

Kagiso Rabada is the new batsman. He's a lefty, averages 14.64 in Test cricket with a top score of 34 - and is immediately off the mark with a single. Bavuma guides what feels like the first four for about an hour, through the covers, and goes into double figures with a two off his legs.

Maharaj is an edge waiting to happen with the way he opens that right shoulder. Dean Elgar and Heino Kuhn, get ready because I think you might have to bat again tonight. Rabada is charging down the steps to come in next, that's not going to help South Africa!

    Maharaj c Cook b Stokes 5 (SA 61-7)

A tail-ender's waft from Maharaj, and catching practice for Alastair Cook at first slip. The procession continues.

Remember, South Africa are a batsman short with Vernon Philander in hospital.

    Bavuma 4, Maharaj 5

James Anderson is in his element in overcast conditions like this, with the ball moving around, two less than confident batsmen at the crease, and a predatory slip cordon ready to snaffle anything that comes their way. The fact that Morne Morkel already has his pads on, will not bring much solace to the South African fans. Bavuma, looking to take any runs that he thinks are there, scrambles a two wide of mid-off.

Jimmy Anderson's caught and bowled, he has nine of them now. It's more of a spinners thing and Murali and Kumble both have 35, but amongst seamers only Richard Hadlee with 10 has more.

    25 overs

Maharaj is wearing a chest pad - a sign he's not the most confident of batsmen, and probably batting a place or two higher than he should because of Philander's illness. Stokes bowls a no-ball which Maharaj knocks for a single, Bavuma tips-and-runs a single and Maharaj looks all at sea. We've got another 80 minutes of play if the light holds.

AL: We knew England would comfortably win this. Just like we know they'll get smashed in the next game. Standard England.

Roy Cole: Toby Roland-Jones = Glenn McGrath

MD: Don't get too excited about TRJ just yet. One bad innings and the knives will be out. England fans are just too fickle.

If conditions are like this absolutely no question I would ask them to follow on. It's a no-brainer.

  13. SA 56-6published at 17:35 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

    Anderson 7-3-14-2

Despite being six down, with Philander in hospital, South Africa are virtually seven down - unless Philander fancies an Eddie Paynter-style dash back to the ground. Paynter contracted tonsilitis in the Brisbane Test of the Bodyline series, external in 1932-33, but left his hospital bed to come out and score 83 from 218 balls.

Keshav Maharaj is in at number eight, goes for a risky single but England try an even riskier throw at the unprotected stumps at the bowler's end - it goes for four overthrows so Maharaj picks up the second "five" of the match.

You have to say the two teams have taken it in turns to be shambolic with the bat. South Africa at Lord's, England at Trent Bridge. Conditions are not easy but it has not been good. Marvellous from England. Anderson was not that good with the new ball but now he is on a roll.

    Morris c & b Anderson 2 (SA 51-6)

What did I say about building pressure? The tentative Morris prods forward and offers Anderson - an excellent fielder - a diving return catch.

There's a brief glimmer of hope for South Africa while they check the no-ball - but once again, the very back of the bowler's boot was behind the line.

George Simpson-Hayward is the last double-barreled England bowler to take five wickets in an innings.

    Bavuma 1, Morris 2

Roland-Jones takes a rest after bowling eight overs straight (albeit either side of tea), and Ben Stokes is going to have a trundle. Bavuma tries an expansive cut shot but it's cut out at backward point. Once again he looks nervous between the wickets, as though he's a run-out waiting to happen. A maiden over keeps the pressure building.

It's a good score, 353, on this wicket but I wouldn't say it's a monster score. England scrapped yesterday, it was a bit easier this morning and no Philander helped. They have earned the right to bowl in these conditions. The clouds started to get a bit lower and the lights came on, perfect conditions to get the ball in the hand.

Anderson fields well off his own bowling as Morris tries to drive him down the ground. Morris still doesn't look comfortable at all against Anderson, spending most of his time fishing at thin air. Jimmy has 1-9 from six overs, with three maidens.
