  1. Close of playpublished at 19:02 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

    SA 126-8 (trail by 227)

Yep, we're past the official close of play (and the extra half-hour to bowl the overs), so a wicket now would make very little difference. Moeen brings the field in after three deliveries, but Bavuma is booking in for bed and breakfast here, helping himself to a jogged two through the covers, and blocking out the last ball of the day.

  2. SA 124-8published at 18:59 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

Aleem Dar has a look at his light meter - and England have to turn back to Moeen Ali. It's a gamble which could leak runs - but could also give them the chance of taking that ninth wicket tonight with Vernon Philander unable to bat. However, they've wasted so much time in this last session, that it's going to be after 19:00 BST by the time they start this over anyway. In which case they'd just go off anyway, with Philander still able to bat. Here comes Moeen...

Morkel hit on the pad by Broad, bowling from round the wicket... umpire Joel Wilson unimpressed, but England opt against using their one remaining review. Maiden over.

The way Bavuma has played has been a lesson to the South African batsmen, you've got to graft and hang in there, flick a few away when you can. Playing it late is something we all talk about, from under your eyeline, too many have played expansive drives away from the body, it's just not possible in these conditions.

    Roland-Jones 11-3-39-4

Bavuma watchfully sees out the rest of Roland-Jones' over. Probably time for two more overs tonight, considering all the faffing around both teams have done today - we'll likely be about 10 overs short, despite there being no rain.

Stuart Broad's 374th Test wicket, it takes him past Waqar Younis to 18th on the all-time list.

    30 needed to avoid follow-on

Roland-Jones to bowl to Morkel, with a debut five-for in his sights. Morkel fluently hits a single square of the wicket, and turns down any thought of a second. Bavuma is happy to see off the Middlesex right-armer.

With the clock having now ticked past 10 minutes to seven, if a wicket falls now, that'll be the close of play - but if so, what might be interesting would be when England might have to declare whether they're enforcing the follow-on. Would they have until 10 minutes before play tomorrow, for instance?!

    40 overs

Morne Morkel in at number 10 - we don't think we'll see Philander tonight, the last we heard he was still in hospital. A wicket in the next couple of minutes, and South Africa could be following on tonight. Like Rabada, Morkel's a left-hander, and he's up and running straight away as Broad strays with his line and Morkel helps himself to a single to fine leg. Bavuma drives through the covers for four, earning the congratulations of his batting partner - who's about a foot taller than he is. And there's no thought of farming the strike - he cracks the last ball of the over for four as well.

That's a leg break, that is an absolute beauty, it almost hit middle and hit off. It almost went like a spinner's delivery, it was a good wicket for England because that partnership was starting to get irritating. Maybe it hit a crack because it has jagged. It was well caught by Alastair Cook at slip because it was flying towards his nose.

    Rabada b Broad 30 (SA 114-8)

A beauty! Almost like a fast leg-break - the ball beats Rabada's defensive stroke and hits the top of off stump. That should wake the crowd up.

  15. SA 114-7published at 18:42 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

Stuart Broad removes his broad-brimmed sunhat and sleeveless sweater, perhaps he can produce one of those bursts of wickets for which he's famous (or should that be infamous). He finds Rabada's edge... and it's brilliantly taken by Stokes at gully, albeit on the first bounce.

  16. 50 runs

    SA 114-7

TRJ from the Vauxhall End - but the runs continue to flow as Rabada chops a boundary through point, before Bavuma opens the face to guide four more past gully and bring up the fifty partnership. Suddenly the 40 needed to avoid the follow-on doesn't look that far away - and if these two can see it through to the close, who knows - maybe Vernon Philander will be well enough to bat tomorrow. There's 20 minutes left tonight.

It's as though the life has been squeezed out of this game by that passage of spin bowling. Suddenly, even Stokes looks less than his usually threatening self as Rabada adds a two and a single to the score.

Meanwhile, on BBC Radio 5 live, Alison Mitchell and Alec Stewart will recap the day's play after 19:00 BST on 5 live Sport, followed by plenty of football at 19:30 and then the Formula 1 preview show from 21:00.

  20. SA 100-7published at 18:31 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

    Bavuma 19, Rabada 21

This should get the crowd going - Toby Roland-Jones is back, having taken 4-22 from his first eight overs in Test cricket. Rabada reduces the follow-on target by four more with an edge past the slips that he didn't know much about, and with a lack of energy among the fielders, he takes the opportunity to run a quick single. Hundred up for the Proteas.
