It's that awkward angle from Morkel to the left-hander when he nips one back. Toby Roland-Jones is more than capable with the bat. He'll be a bit nervous, but he'll be looking to form a partnership with Stokes.

    Moeen c De Kock b Morkel 16 (Eng 279-7)

Yep, he's gone. It was an inside edge onto the pad and safely pouched by De Kock. That brings in the last of England's debutants, Toby Roland-Jones.

De Kock was very confident as soon as he caught it. But he's got a little inside nick onto the flap of the pad.

The South Africans think Moeen has got an edge to the keeper but umpire Wilson said no. They have two new reviews and are going to use one.

Greg Tomlinson: Bruce Grobbelaar hit the biggest flattest six, sweeping, I've ever seen, six-a-side competition St Johns Isle of Man.

The Authors CC‏: David Seaman is a very decent seam bowler & turns out for Lords Taverners.

  7. Eng 279-6published at 90 overs

    Stokes 68, Moeen 16

Some extra bounce from Rabada surprises Stokes, who takes a hand off the bat but guides the ball to safety for a single. Some hefty clouds accumulating over Bill's mum's.

    Morkel 1-63 off 25

The anoraks are on and the hoods are up but the rain is not amounting to much so far. Morkel has two slips and a gully for Moeen and tries a bouncer but the England batsmen look comfortable, biding their time and quietly consolidating.

Neil Smith once threw up in the middle of a World Cup match in Peshawar in 1996. He'd been brought in to open the batting, which was one of the brilliant ideas England had on the eve of a World Cup.

I've played a couple of times when I've been poorly, and it's not a very nice feeling. A couple of times in India, and I remember once in the Caribbean when I ate a dodgy chicken's foot or something. It was a bit like biltong.

Not sure Philander would have been risking anything during lunch, not in protest against the menu, but he is still suffering with that unfortunate stomach upset. In his absence it is Rabada who takes up the attack and he is driven stylishly off the back foot by Moeen for two. The first umbrellas of the day are up but we are continuing for the moment.

Mark Gregory‏: Jim Cumbes - Lancs and Worcs - was West Brom's goalie so maybe the best cricketing keeper.

Fintan‏: I once played against Nigel Martyn in a local T20 game and he slapped us everywhere. Luckily it was rained off.

    Stokes 64, Moeen 11

No early casualty after lunch, Moeen keeping the bowling with a single off the final ball. England coach Trevor Bayliss is obviously happy with the situation, he literally has his feet up on the balcony.

We always say "the next session's important" at Test matches, but the next hour and a half will determine whether England can motor on past 350. You fancy it's going to be entertaining, whatever happens.

No interruptions for rain yet, it looks a bit overcast as the South Africans take the field for a pre-session huddle. The new ball is only six overs old and the angular figure of Morne Morkel is about to charge in with it from the pavilion end.

  16. Postpublished at 13:37 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

A useful total for England, with Stokes and Moeen at the crease having the potential to add plenty more. Moeen has made 10 from 20 balls and he hit his only boundary to date in unusual fashion when he attempted to leave one that struck the middle of the bat and went beautifully away through the gap.

Kagiso Rabada was a bit unpredictable with the ball for South Africa but he sent down a beauty to Jonny Bairstow shortly before lunch and the England wicketkeeper edged to second slip, where he was smartly caught by Faf du Plessis for 36, ending a partnership of 75 with Stokes.
