Who's winning the Test match at the moment?

You always go with the team with the runs on the board. Anything under 300, South Africa would be on top. They're about par now. But if England can bowl well as a unit, anything above 350 is going to be competitive.

    Stokes 84, Broad 1

Many people still talk about the effects of Stuart Broad being hit by a bouncer a few years ago. Rabada is up at 86mph but the tall England tailender is off the mark with a slightly hesitant poke that evades the gully fielder. Nothing hesitant about the Stokes pull shot, confidently helped round the corner to fine-leg for his ninth boundary.

Some lovely shots in his 25 from 25 balls on debut. He'll also be thinking he'll be getting the ball in hand soon in these conditions. The cloud is starting to get as dark and as low as it did yesterday.

Broad has to hang in here, with Ben Stokes on 79. Just occupy the crease for 15-20 minutes.

    Roland-Jones lbw b Maharaj 25 (Eng 316-8)

You can't have a good time forever, as someone once said, and the debutant's very entertaining innings ends to the slow left-arm of Maharaj. Pushing forward he was trapped in front, umpire Abraham Lincoln/Aleem Dar raises the finger and they didn't even bother with a review. Replays indicate it was hitting halfway up leg stump so they were right.

Rakesh Pradhan: Not as reckless as the second Test but still this is not a match-defining score. 400 plus needed to put pressure on.

    Stokes 78, Roland-Jones 25

Nearly that magic yorker from Rabada but Roland-Jones gets the bottom of the bat on it. He then unleashes the whirling dervish pull and picks up his fifth boundary. The crowd are savouring this enthralling cameo and getting thoroughly involved.

I'm not sure he absolutely intended that to go there, but it's flown over fine leg for six! Another nomination for the Brian Johnston Champagne Moment, along with that ball which knocked Malan over yesterday. Morris has gone for 91 from 17 overs.

    Stokes 77, Roland-Jones 21

Stokes flicks Morris off his pads for his eighth boundary and is quite happy to let Roland-Jones have the strike, quite justifiably as the Middlesex seamer turns one confidently to the mid-wicket boundary for his third four. Not content with that there is a swivel pull that flies off the top of the bat - it might even have been the handle - into the stands for the maximum.

    Stokes 70, Moeen 11

Roland-Jones relishing the challenge against Morkel, and a classical drive to the long-off boundary would be ideal for the MCC coaching manual, if that still exists, high elbow, perfect balance. He's using a fine bat, made in Sussex by a legendary company who have the same name as a fine racecourse in Berkshire.

The unpredictable Morris back in the attack from the Vauxhall End and when Stokes plays an extravagant pull it skews off the very bottom of the bat and away to safety out on the off side for a single. Roland-Jones, who has a first-class average of 22, collects his first Test boundary with a neat leg glance.

Morkel gets two deliveries at the new batsman to close the over but does not cause him any difficulty, wide of the off stump and then harmlessly down the leg side. The wind is picking up and the clouds are still heavy but no heavy rain yet.

Toby Roland-Jones is the first Tobias to play Test cricket, although there's Tobias Vissee, external who has played Twenty20 internationals for the Netherlands.

His middle name is Skelton - there was a Clarence Skelton Wimble, external who played one Test for South Africa in 1892, and made a pair.

In terms of hyphens, though, he can't beat TMS's Ebony-Jewel Cora-Lee Camelia Rosamond Rainford-Brent., external

Three slips and a gully for Rabada to Roland-Jones, who scores his first Test runs with a neat turn off his hip past short square-leg for two. His international debut came in May against the South Africans in the one-dayers in that match at Lord's where England were 20-6 and he made a useful 37 not out.

Roland-Jones, who has a first-class century to his name in addition to eight fifties, calmly keeps out his first three deliveries, the last of which nips back off the seam quite sharply and might have caused some consternation.
