The England players looking purposeful on the boundary edge. Stokes is the last man down the steps, he has just hit 112 from 153 balls after all. Three successive sixes, fantastic stuff. Jimmy Anderson will bowl the first over. Tea will now be at 15:55 BST we are told, a moveable feast.

Ben Stokes is only the second Englishman to hit three consecutive sixes in a Test match. The only previous player to do so was Wally Hammond, hitting Jack Newman for three sixes at Auckland when he made 336 not out., external

That's one of the best innings you'll see. Ben Stokes showed poise and determination yesterday, and he's got his side into a really good position today. 320 was par for me, 353 puts England in a really good position.

These are the type of grounds that kill you as an opening batsman, as you'll have been chasing the ball around the field, then you've got to climb about 45 steps up to the dressing-room, and by the time you get there you've probably got six minutes until the umpires come out again.

Rory Cameron: Right on cue Ben Stokes brings up century in style and wakes up the crowd in preparation for England to take the field!

Michael S-J: Wonderful hundred by Ben Stokes! He said this week that England would bounce back and he's led the way superbly.

Stokes c Rabada b Morkel 112 (Eng 353 all out)

A thrilling innings comes to an end, Stokes with another mighty swipe but this one not as well timed and taken on the long off boundary. The England all-rounder takes the applause from the exuberant crowd and runs off the field, England will have a handy pre-tea session to test the South Africans in overcast conditions.

  7. Eng 351-9published at 15:07 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

    Stokes 110, Anderson 1

Stokes takes a single off Rabada's fifth delivery and to one of the loudest cheers of the match Anderson safely keeps out the last one. Tea, usually at 15:40 BST of course, will be at 16:10 BST today in any case because of yesterday's rain.

Stokes fought so hard yesterday, he's earned the right to play today. What a terrific player to watch. The crowd are on fire, all revved up.

Make that three sixes in a row, this one flatter and way over mid-wicket. Maybe Maharaj was not the best choice to bowl this over.

But no doubt about this one, he simply repeats the shot and it sails over long-on for six to bring up a magnificent fifth Test hundred.

Stokes takes it on and lofts into the leg side. Du Plessis takes the catch at deep mid-wicket but falls backwards and touches the rope in doing so.

Daniel: A well constructed innings by England, a very mature answer to their criticism. Good partnerships and they've put the graft in.

That almost floated to Hashim Amla, it took an age to get to him at first slip. This now leaves Jimmy Anderson under a bit of pressure with Stokes on 91.

This Test match has been a terrific advertisement for Test cricket with top-class bowling and gritty batting. This begs the question as to why this series is not a five-Test series which is what England v SA should be.

Stokes down the wicket to Maharaj and a mighty slog sweep on one knee sails into the crowd many rows back. A group of them ready themselves for the catch and one of the only ones without a pint glass gets both hands on it...only for it to squeeze out of his grasp like a bar of soap in the shower. The TV cameras thoughtfully replay it in slow motion for him.

Jackets being pulled on, umbrellas going up, rain falling pretty steadily. In the Peter May Stand, there's absolutely no cover. "It doesn't make for great spectating," says the bloke next to me.
