This late middle order of England, if you're not careful, take the game away from you very quickly. You want to keep a bit of control but if you bowl poorly against Stokes, Bairstow and Ali it gets away from you and it's hard to get it back again.

Here'a a couple of Stokes boundaries from earlier in today's play:

  4. Eng 210-5published at 11:48 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

    Stokes 46, Bairstow 6

Morris, polishing the ball on his flannels, gets a mid-over visit from captain Faf du Plessis, who has to jog all the way back to second slip. (Always a consequence for your over-rate when your skipper is a slipper, rather than a mid-off like Michael Vaughan was). Unfortunately for Faf, Morris serves up another loosener which Stokes punches through extra cover for the third four of the over.

The South Africa captain should be saying to Morris "I can't bowl you if you're going to bowl this sort of tripe."

  6. Eng 206-5published at 11:45 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

    Stokes 42 from 64 balls

A change of bowling at the Pavilion End - perhaps with one eye on the second new ball, which is available in 12 overs' time. Morkel, who took a bit of tap last over, is replaced by fellow right-arm seamer Chris Morris, but Stokes whacks him through the covers for four to bring up England's 200. Next ball is a ropey half-volley and Stokes drills it through mid-on for four more.

Now Bairstow joins in the fun, cover-driving Philander for four to bring a warm ripple of applause from the Oval crowd. And Philander leaves the field for the second time today...

I'm actually very pleased with England's current position. The way Test matches are going at the moment, any scoreboard pressure on SA at the start of their first innings and that will be the Test nicely wrapped up.

You have to be conscious that the odd ball will move. Stokes got beaten a few times yesterday but he stuck it out. Stokes, Bairstow and Ali will score quickly. It's when they get frenetic like Bairstow did at Nottingham. Just don't get carried away because you can get yourself out then.

  11. Eng 194-5published at 11:38 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

    Stokes 34 from 61 balls

Stokes, taking on the role of senior partner, is in "stand and deliver" mode against Morkel - with a bloodthirsty pull for four through cow corner from a ball outside off stump. The left-hander then powerfully thumps one back at the bowler - Morkel gets a paw on it, on the bounce, which probably turns a likely four into a two. It's as though an alarm has gone off in Stokes' head, now he's trying to force one down the leg side and they run two leg byes.

England rugby union coach Eddie Jones is watching in the crowd. Perhaps he's wondering if he can get Stokes in for the Six Nations.

Cook will be disappointed no to get a hundred, his 88 taking 301 minutes and 200 balls, with 10 fours. His conversion rate has dropped a little though, his first 54 fifties he went to a hundred 25 times but since then in just five of his 31 fifties he has gone on to a hundred. It's the 10th time Morkel has got Cook out, the most by any bowler, Mitchell Johnson got him nine times.

  13. Eng 186-5published at 11:33 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

    Stokes 28, Bairstow 2

Having been off the field for that wicket, Philander is back on in time to continue his spell - and the right-handed Bairstow is off the mark, pushing a two through the leg side.

Simon Parker‏: Broad not changed into kit yet. How long has he been playing in an England team? You'd think he might know better.

I sympathise. A couple of weeks ago, a batting collapse left me in the "oh heck, I'm next in and I don't even have my thigh pad on" scenario...

The emotions of a crowd during a review are quite something to see. First the gasp when the umpire's finger goes up, then a half-cheer of defiance when the call for another look is made. When the process begins, the whole ground is silent, watching the screens and listening to the unseen voice from the gods. When Cook's fate is shown to be sealed, there's a sigh, an expletive from the bloke next me, followed by loud applause for an excellent knock.

Jonny Bairstow the new batsman - dropped down from number five to number seven. Interestingly, he averages 46.50 in Test cricket at number seven, 45.91 at six, but only 30.15 at five. (And for completists, he averages 38 from two innings at eight, and 15 from one innings at four).

Big, big wicket, we were just saying he was looking to stay back in his crease and he got a bit trapped, but you've got to be a bit unlucky for Morkel from his height to be hitting the stumps.

As soon as the umpire's finger goes up the review will not help you, the stumps almost get bigger.

    Cook lbw b Morkel 88 (Eng 183-5)

Not a no-ball, hits him just below the knee-roll, is that going down leg or will it be an umpire's call? Yep - umpire's call for clipping the leg bail. And now Cook's watch is ended, 12 short of a prized 31st Test ton.
