The best ball of the innings by a mile, it flew up off a length, moved away and Elgar, prodding forward, recoiled as if he had seen something horrific in the scullery. There is no edge, however and South Africa will only have one more over to survive in the murk before the sanctuary of the tea interval.

Toby Roland-Jones' inclusion in this England team won't do anything for their over-rate. His run-up is a mile long, his trudge back unurgent. In county cricket, it's infamous. He's also a little sensitive about it.

    Elgar 7, Kuhn 10

Raining steadily now as Toby Roland-Jones, having made an entertaining 25 with four fours and a six with the bat, comes on for his first spell in Test cricket from the Vauxhall End. Captain Root collects some towels and hands some to the slip fielders but the new ball gets a soaking as Kuhn cuts to the boundary.

Gollo: Re: Matt Whatmough [15:32] - I'm English mate, but Stokes will get nowhere near Kallis!

Francis Edwards: Stokes makes one hundred and now all of a sudden he's as good as Freddie and Kallis... utterly ridiculous!

And Broad is fired up for the challenge, he's up at 87mph but Kuhn clips him away to mid-wicket for his first boundary. There is then a confident appeal for a catch down the leg side but captain Root is wise not to listen to calls for a review, it was off the trousers.

It's very dark, the breeze is whipping through the players' whites and the clouds are threatening to burst. Really feels like a time to be bowling.

Broad beats Elgar outside the off stump twice with beautiful deliveries moving away from the left-hander. A second maiden for the big seamer, who asks the South African how he didn't get an edge. There is a curt reply but it all looks good natured enough.

Another maiden for Anderson, trying to tempt Kuhn outside the off stump. It's still overcast and breezy and the floodlights are shining brightly, but the spectators are in good order, thrilled by that Stokes century. It looks like Gordon Strachan in a coterie of drinkers but this gentleman is wearing salmon pink trousers and I very much doubt Gordon possesses a pair of those.

Matt Whatmough: As much as I love Freddie, Stokes could be as close to Kallis as we we'll get.

Tom Laskowski: Who doesn't enjoy watching Test match cricket, fantastic knock from Stokesy, batting with the tail!

Sean Ennis: It seems whatever new batters we give opportunities to, we're forever relying on Root, Cook & Stokes to carry the rest.

Three slips and two gullies packed in for Broad as he charges in from the Pavilion End. A maiden but the granite-like Elgar is able to leave most of them alone.

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

Of all the moments when South Africa were bowling, you could say there was no real difficulty when Morris, who bowled some rubbish, or the left-arm spinner Maharaj were bowling. But when Philander bowled, he made it talk, so 350 is quite good, I think. You've got something to bowl with, but you've got to catch well, as South Africa did - they caught everything in the slips.

Thomas Stead: 353 a decent score given the conditions. Tricky 20 min period before tea for SA. Hope Broad & Jimmy can get a couple.
