    Eng 16-0

Dropped! Jennings has a life as Philander finds the edge, but it's shelled by Dean Elgar at third slip. A hard chance, but one South Africa will feel should have been taken.

And to add insult to injury to illness, not only does the ball go for four, but Philander - off the field for most of day two and in hospital last night - leaves the field at the end of the over.

Jim Chapman: Come on Keaton Jennings! Now is your time. Relax and play your natural game.

The Patio Cricketers: Big Vern bowling some little dibbly-dobblers here! Obviously still feeling the effects of the bug.

Jennings shoulders arms to Philander, before doing some mid-pitch gardening. Rain is normally good news for the nation's gardeners, if not the nation's cricketers, and a few umbrellas are being raised around The Oval as Jennings gets away with a fortunate inside edge for four - the ball going between his pads and leg stump, and away for four.

It's a mind thing with Jennings, we know his technique has been exposed but he has got out so many times, his career is probably on the line in this innings. The one positive thing he has to remember is you can't make runs if you don't bat. You can see he is batting out of his crease, trying something. I would say open up a little more to Philander, who is not bowling at his fastest as he has not been well. tell yourself sensible positive things, play until lunch, if he stays there he can pick up runs.

With rain forecast later, one lady in the crowd has taken a sensible precaution - having decided to come in fancy dress, she's gone for the all-encompassing zebra suit, which ought to keep her drier than one or two other fancy-dress outfits on show. Talking of zebras, can Keaton Jennings earn his stripes in this innings? After four leg byes advance the score, the Durham man squeezes a single to point to double his score. Cook matches him by driving a two through the covers.

I found as captain I was a big target so I felt the pressure every innings I played. In 2008 I clearly remember being all over the shop for the first 15 minutes but then Anderson bowled me one bouncer which I hit for four.

Rachel T: Really hope having 178 on the board will help Jennings relax and score some runs.

Paul Mackereth: We might be about to witness Jennings' last innings for England for quite a while.

Yep, it's Vernon Philander to take the new ball from the Vauxhall End - like Graeme Smith, I wonder how many overs he'll be able to bowl in each spell, considering that he spent last night in hospital on a drip. Unsurprisingly, he looks a bit down on pace. Jennings is up and running thanks to a misfield, as he taps the ball straight to mid-wicket where Rabada needlessly throws to to the bowler's end - where Cook was not attempting to run - and it's not fielded cleanly, allowing England to run one.

South Africa need England 30-3. If there is any kind of partnership you feel it is going to be a long haul for them. Philander is out there so it looks like he is going to bowl with the new ball, but you can't see him being able to bowl long spells.

Vernon Philander is having a stretch in the deep, we can assume he's going to take the second over, but Morne Morkel - fresh from his entertaining cameo with the bat - begins proceedings, bowling round the wicket to England's two left-handers. Cook, watchful as ever, is content to play out a maiden over.

I think four was just a position too high for De Kock. If you go two down too quickly, he is a naturally attacking player. It's brilliant if you're 120-2 but if you're 20-2 England would fancy getting him out by the way he plays.

Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings walk out to begin the second innings. If Jennings reads the papers, or social media, he may be aware he's under a bit of pressure after this first-innings dismissal:

The last five-for on debut for England was Adil Rashid in Abu Dhabi a couple of years ago, but that was in the second innings. The most recent in the first innings was Graham Onions in 2009.

rae: Eng v SA - Roland Jones 5-fer! Proof again that temperament above all else is key at Test match level.

Francis Edwards: Well done TRJ, but remember Jennings got 100 on debut.. won't be long before he's bowling on Aussie roads and people moan.

  18. When to declare?published at 12:22 British Summer Time 29 July 2017

So, we're not quite halfway through the Test (there's still 40 minutes until lunch on day three) and we're through 20 wickets already.

Now then - imagine you're Joe Root. Assuming England don't revert to Trent Bridge batting mode and get rolled over in a couple of hours, what would be your target for a declaration - in terms of runs, and in terms of time?

South Africa cannot think about the weather forecast, they have to think how they are going to compete and focus going forward. You're not sure if Philander will be able to play much of a role. Chris Morris looked really out of sorts, missing marks by huge margins so he will be looking to make amends. You can expect a little more on offer for Maharaj and Du Plessis might turn to him early for contol. There is a lot of time left in this Test match so you would expect England to bat until lunch or just before tea tomorrow if they are not bowled out.

India have wrapped up victory in the Test match in Galle, hammering Sri Lanka by 304 runs after the hosts subsided from 217-4 to 245 all out (two of their batsmen were absent hurt). Dimuth Karunaratne made 97, with spin duo Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja taking three wickets each. Full scorecard here.
