Official confirmation, the umpires quite rightly deeming that conditions were not going to improve in 12 minutes, so that 17:30 BST inspection was not necessary. We are done for the day at The Oval.

Ashley: Have we seen 2 much for a part refund? Really disappointed, been looking foward to 2day, nothing better than Aggers commentary!

I'm afraid so Ashley, just checking the ECB rules and regs and anything less than 15 overs constitutes a full refund, but more than 30, which we have had today, and the ECB can trouser the lot.

Hello again, we'll have another inspection again at 17:30 BST. No promises of play mind you, there is still a lot of water to dispose of. In fact, it's still raining steadily. It should be a while before we get the threats of a hosepipe ban though eh? Let us know if you're still at the ground and how the hospitality is. #bbccricket

Well, with the rain falling, we'll leave you to ponder such things as which cartoon character Keaton Jennings most closely resembles. TMS is still in full flow though, with the Stewarts regaling some good stories, so stay tuned to that.

The moment we have any further news we will be right back with you. England are 252 runs ahead at 74-1, Cook the man out, bowled by a beauty from Morkel for seven. Keaton Jennings has ridden his luck well for 34 and debutant Tom Westley has made an assured 28.

Earlier another debutant, Toby Roland-Jones, picked up 5-57 as South Africa were all out for 175, adding 49 this morning. Temba Bavuma top-scored for the tourists with a defiant 52.

    Cheerio for now.

Ex-England batsman and coach Micky Stewart on TMS: "They didn't like the title 'team manager' when I was first there because it was too much like football, so I was officially 'assistant manager' on the 86-87 tour to Australia, when we won everything. It was a talented side of individuals with the likes of Gower and Botham - but not only did we lose to West Indies, we lost to India and New Zealand at home."

I remember Paul Adams, the "frog in a blender", and when he ran up to bowl, that was the first we'd ever seen of him. Nowadays, with international or domestic cricket, everything is filmed. I think you've got to be careful not to overload players with coaching. The coach isn't out in the middle with you - you've got to think for yourself while soaking up that information.

Sometimes we berate the weather forecasters, but they've been infuriatingly accurate today. It's possible there might not be any more play today.

The umbrellas are still up but the square has not been fully covered, although here they come with some hefty ones. Much of the playing area under wraps now. A reminder that England are 74-1, leading by 252, with Keaton Jennings on 34 and Tom Westley on 28.

Ex-England batsman and coach Micky Stewart on TMS: "In my day, the majority of the media were non-players. You never got the analysis there is now, as coaching, for want of a better name, was a dirty word in those days. Now there are thousands of coaches up and down the country, and they've all got a view."

You need to be aware of your game when you get picked for England, like I was at 26. It's a massive learning curve. So you've probably had a couple of ups and downs in your county career by then, which helps you deal with everything thrown at you in the international arena. Look at Keaton Jennings, this is his first little "hiccup" and everyone's talking about whether he should play in the next Test match - this is something he's never experienced before.
