Jennings looks like he's trying to hit the ball a bit more, rather than just block it. Little things, like being dropped at slip, can turn your career. You've almost got to take a few risks if you're in a poor trot of form.

The svelte figure of Kagiso Rabada takes up the attack from the Vauxhall End but Jennings, dropped on six before lunch remember, looks much more assured with a cut for four, followed by a sweetly struck back foot punch to bring up the England fifty.

Our man Stephan Shemilt has asked Dan Norcross to ask Tuffers: if Morne Morkel had been two or three inches shorter, how many more wickets might he have got?

He's got that very, very awkward length, a bit like how Curtly Ambrose used to bowl, which usually misses the edge but is difficult to score off. But in answer to the question - no. I saw a fantastic stat at Trent Bridge about how only 17% of his deliveries would have hit the stumps. But I'd love to be 6ft 7ins and bowl at the speed of light.

Jonny Bairstow makes his way from the nets past the crowd and gets a few good wishes, he's marching along holding a bat in each hand with the handles facing down, a new form of power walking. Morkel doesn't quite get it right in this over, but his seven overs have produced the wicket of Cook and cost only nine runs.

The powerfully-built Philander has bowled a few beauties moving away from the right-handed Westley but he strays on to the pads and the Essex debutant flicks away with a flourish for his third boundary.

    Jennings 18, Westley 5

Cooky appeared to be watching something in the dressing room there, while another former England opener, Mike Atherton, had just been analysing Morkel's bowling. Another tremendous delivery from big Morne, pitching on middle to the left-handed Jennings and bouncing over off at close to 89mph.

Cook is left on 999 Test runs at The Oval,, external he's now been dismissed by Morne Morkel 11 times in Test cricket. That's the joint highest by a South African against England - Allan Donald got Mike Atherton out 11 times, and the other one goes back a while - Athol Rowan dismissed Len Hutton 11 times.

A lot was made of Westley turning the face of the bat to leg but this one is a delightful drive that beats extra cover and races across the lush, manicured turf for four. He is also beaten by a couple of delightful away swingers from Philander from the Vauxhall End, who is up around his usual pace in high 70's-mph.

Root will be thinking "how many sessions will I need to bowl South Africa out?" - so if we get more rain, that will make it interesting.

Morkel has it on a string here, like Sandie Shaw, not one for the younger listeners. Debutant Westley's first ball is a beauty moving away outside off stump but he makes no contact and then gets off the mark with a single into the leg side.

That was a great 10 balls at Cook that Morne Morkel has bowled. He beat him a couple of times in the last over. It's a good wicket for South Africa, they've got to keep their energy levels up and think they could chase 300-350 if the sun comes out.

    Cook b Morkel 7 (Eng 30-1)

It had been coming. This one was perfect, squaring Cook up from round the wicket and clipping the top of off stump. Superb bowling again from the big paceman. Jennings will be very thankful he didn't get one of those.

Four more to Jennings with a thick edge off Philander to the third man boundary. Bavuma, as with everything he does it seems, gave 100% to the chase and tried to step on the ball but touched the rope with his boot at the same time.

Morkel beats Cook a couple of times with some beautiful deliveries outside off stump but the former England skipper simply shrugs his shoulders and smiles benignly like a young Nicholas Lyndhurst in one of his many sitcoms. I sent Nicholas a tweet the other day, no reply. A few words from Morkel, they won't get to Cooky.

Jennings cannot get his head to the ball - he's just so upright and stiff in his stance, like someone stuck a pole in his back. He needs to work on his posture - maybe he's very conscious about holding his balance, not falling over and getting out lbw. But an inside edge for four, you take it and run.

  19. Eng 26-0published at 13:36 British Summer Time 29 July 2017

    Cook 7, Jennings 14

The luck is with Jennings so far, that's another flat-footed drive that has come off the inside edge and it flies past the stumps for four. A Chinese Cut it used to be called, but that might not be used now. Dark clouds building but dry at the time of this sentence.
