All in all, that's a good morning for England. It was moving around this morning and Cook was the epitome of patience. Westley's also looked in decent order, too. As for Jennings... there was a horrible sense of inevitability about that dismissal, and he had a good chance this morning with no Vernon Philander for South Africa.

England have battled well and will be happy with their work. Cook has been assured, as he has been all series.
Ah, the final over before lunch. The time when my thoughts are firmly fixed on what sort of chocolate I can eat. Marahaj will bowl it and, oh, he beats Westley with a peach! A hint of turn as the ball span past Westley's outside edge, and de Kock whipped the bails off for good measure. Westley blinks a couple of times before getting further forward to defend, bat and pad tucked closely together. A maiden, and that is that for the morning.

Jennings' technique reminds me of Nick Compton, very static and little movement to the ball. Most of his dismissals just seem to be prods! The search continues.

Cook 31, Westley 19
Olivier spears a ball down the leg side and Cook chases it, before chastising himself as the ball lands in Quinton de Kock's gloves. Kagiso Rabada rubs sawdust into some damp patches before Cook carries on dropping the ball this way and that. He's more than content to play out a maiden.
And here is Westley in full flight, whacking the ball for four.
Maharaj 3-1-2-0
Ah, here's Keshav Maharaj again. Cook swats a cut but Dean Elgar, the sole slip, does well to dive and grab the ball. A single comes along as Cook chips the ball off his hip,and then Maharaj spends a while directing traffic as Westley takes his guard. A swipe down the pitch is cut off by du Plessis to keep Westley quiet.

Bananas queueing for the bar. Obviously.
Duanne Olivier is back for another dart before lunch. He goes short to Westley, who throws the bat at it - but there's enough on the ball to send it over the slips and into the boundary rope. All three slip fielders have their hands on their head and Westley grimaces as he watches the replay, but the only way they were catching that is if they got onto each other's shoulders.

De Bruyn is an innocuous bowler. You have to stay upright, balanced and play it late. I had a dodgy record against it. Ricky Ponting got me out once.
Westley 15, Cook 29
De Bruyn will continue for the moment. A low full toss is pushed off the toes by Cook and down the ground, but there's a fielder there to cut it off and keep the former England skipper on strike. A single brings Westley on strike, de Bruyn serves up something short and wide, and Westley punches it through the covers and away for four. That's a nice bit of timing, beating the two close fielders.

JC: The Jennings shot reminds me of Trescothick early on in an innings. Banger turned out alright! Give the boy time.
And on the subject of technique, Morkel strays onto Westley's pad, and the batsman obligingly works it away to the boundary. That was a lovely turn of the wrists to get it away. Morkel, a tad chastised, goes back to hugging the off stump. Up in the stands, former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd watches on approvingly as Westley edges a good length delivery, but the ball bounces just in front of third slip.

This type of surface will test Westley's technique. We have analysed that front shoulder, the way he comes across himself, but on a surface like this you have to hold your shape and play the ball late.
Cook 28, Westley 7
Maybe that Maharaj niggle was a little more serious than he thought - he's gone off the field, and Theunis de Bruyn has taken his place. His first ball is some rubbish down the leg side and Cook ignores it, but he can't resist a tickle at the next one, and the ball pops tantalisingly up in front of the bowler. It hits the turf before de Bruyn can get to it. A single brings Westley on strike and he drives, but the ball takes the outside edge and bounces just in front of a wandering fielder.
Over in Colombo, India have declared on a massive 622-9 in their first innings against Sri Lanka. Che Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane both scored centuries while Ravindra Jadeja made an unbeaten 70 at number nine.
Sri Lanka have already lost two cheap wickets to Ravichandran Ashwin, and have ended the second day on 50-2.
Cook drives through the covers for a couple, the outfield stopping the ball from trailing away to the ropes. A leisurely single brings up England's 50, and that sparks polite applause from the crowd, the majority of who are wearing sunglasses and massive jumpers. It's windy, sat in those stands. Morkel plonks his hands on his hips, turns and bangs in a short ball that Westley pushes back in his direction. In the slips, Faf and Amla consult one another, a pensive look on the South Africa captain's face.

Jennings will need long hours on his technique. But thinking of another batsman who had trouble with the outside edge in England... Virat Kohli. He managed to sharpen up quite nicely!

Cook 24, Westley 6
The physio comes out for Maharaj, who is poking rather gingerly at his leg, but the spinner waves him away almost as soon as he reaches him. He continues and Cook clips him away, setting off for a single before changing his mind, and Westley has to turn sharpish to get home. A bit of extra pace hurries Cook a bit, but he carries on getting forward to smother any spin, before a push off the back foot brings him a single.
