How about this? This is the view from one of four beds underneath the new hotel. They are taken by competition winners, in this case John, Alexis, Richard and one who didn't want to be named. There's a bar tab and lunch to be delivered at 12. They say they feel a bit exposed, which you would if thousands could see you lying in bed.

Short from Rabada, edge from Cook - and it's gone for four! Ooh, Cook chased that. He was trying to hook it but he wasn't in control and the edge just had enough on it to go over Quinton de Kock's head and go skidding away to the rope. During the last SA series, at The Oval, I remember Dale Steyn bouncing Cook and Cook, eyes shut, head tucked under, managed to hook it for six. If memory serves he got a few words of advice from Steyn in the process.

I'll be surprised if England don't get a total in excess of 350 on this pitch. It should be easy to bat on. Once the hardness of the ball has gone, it will be very easy-paced.

Olivier smacks Jennings on the pad but it's going over the top, by my eyes, and Jennings responds by driving for four. Lovely stuff. Jennings practises a few straight drives but then leaves three consecutive deliveries. Olivier goes a bit too full with the final ball, and Jennings clunks it past him for another couple of runs.

Rabada has Cook in his sights now, and promptly beats him first ball. Full, Cook prods forward with more than a hint of tentativeness, and the ball just misses the outside edge. Rabada scratches his head as he goes back to his mark. He's beaten the bat consistently this morning and not got any rewards. He's bowling in the late 80's according to the speedometer but Cook plays it nicely, pushing a leggy delivery away for two.

Olivier is a swing bowler where it goes early out of the hand. If you're a bowler of that ilk, you need to get your length right so people play at you.

Ah, a change. Here's Duanne Olivier, banging down a short ball that Keaton Jennings chases and misses, leaving him swishing at fresh air. Olivier has an air of Andre Nel about, particularly as he gets to the crease. He's got a furious release of the ball, arms whirling over quickly, but Jennings picks his short ball again and cuts for four. That's better from the bowler - full, straight, and Jennings plays and misses once again.

South Africa's opening pair have bowled really well this morning to keep England in check. Here's Kagiso Rabada's athletic attempt to dismiss Keaton Jennings in the second over of the day.

    Rabada 4-1-10-0

A member of the Lancs ground staff is having a brew out of one of the largest mugs I've seen. Excellent work. Rabada continues, three slips in place, and Cook edges along the ground. Rabada goes a bit shorter and a bit wider, and Cook cuts, and cuts furiously, for another boundary. It was in the air but it was straight between two fielders.

The crowd's barracking of Jennings must surely be because they want their lad Hameed back at the top of the order. If Jennings rescues it with a decent knock, the young Boltonian will be waiting a bit longer.

Shot! Ooh that's a trademark Alastair Cook shot, a straight bat to push the ball beyond the bowler and away to the boundary. A single means that Morkel gets his first look at Keaton Jennings, and Jennings tries to delay the inevitable with a spot of gardening. Jennings prods uncertainly outside his off-stump before Morkel thwacks him on the pad with the final ball of the over. There was some decent bounce on that - the ball went onto the thigh pad, up onto Jennings' arm, hit him on the hand then dropped down by his feet.

It's not a solid block from Jennings. Marcus Trescothick, when in nick, would stop the ball dead when he played a defensive shot. You feel Jennings is tentative and it will find the outside edge.

Crowds can work both ways for players, I imagine. They can pick you up when you're down but there's nothing worse than a groan coming from all sides of the ground when you get out to a daft shot. Quinton de Kock earns himself a round of applause as he goes flailing to his right to cut off a wide Rabada delivery, a move which Tuffers promptly dismisses as "one for the cameras". Excellent from Rabada, keeping Jennings in his crease. A maiden.

The crowd 'cheering' Keaton Jennings is going to do him no favours. If we don't start giving openers more of a chance the selection merry-go-round will just continue.

    Cook 2, Jennings 6

Cook's off the mark! It's taken him 12 balls - not that it'll bother him, mind - but he's up on his toes and pushing square of the wicket. A soggy outfield holds up the ball but there's enough on it for Cook to amble through for two. I like watching Cook run. He goes up and down the wicket like a cartoon character, arms and legs all over the show. Morkel gets Cook playing across his pads, the ball thudding into his thigh, before the batsman inside edges past his stumps. It's not comfortable out there, by any means.

Jennings looks vulnerable outside off stump. I know a lot of batsmen do, especially left-handers, but he is rooted to the crease. He gets himself into a really bad position.

    Rabada 2-0-6-0

Thank you, Mr Samson. Jennings clips a couple off his pads and Rabada, irked at giving up runs, responds with a lovely ball, squaring up the batsman who has his feet in concrete at the minute. You can see Jennings getting caught in two minds, unsure what he should be playing at. Rabada pleads with Aleem Dar as he strikes Jennings on the pad but Aleem adjusts his sunhat and shakes his head. Brilliant, again, from Rabada.

Olivier took 2 wickets in 2 balls to end the game at Trent Bridge then didn't play at The Oval. Is he on a hat-trick when he gets the ball in hand?
