Moeen Ali now has 200 runs and 20 wickets in the series. The last England player to do that was Andrew Flintoff in the 2005 Ashes. Ian Botham did it four times.

A paddle sweep from Moeen, one knee bent and the deftest of touches from the bat, adds another boundary to the total. Maharaj puffs out his cheeks, throws down a short ball and Moeen hoicks it over the head of cover for four! Shot! Moeen goes for a sweep, misses, and the ball cannons up off his pad to Elgar at slip.

I'm starting to think that the rain might miss us. It's dark as night and the hills in the distance have taken a good dousing, but the wind is blowing hard enough to keep the clouds moving. It's still freezing cold, though.

  4. Eng 171-7published at 57 overs

    Roland-Jones 10, Moeen 16

People around me are consulting a variety of rain radar websites. I don't know about the rain but it looks miserable out there. It's really grey, even with the lights on. Stuart Broad takes a swig of tea as Moeen cracks a cover drive, and a fine, tumbling stop from Kagiso Rabada halts him in his tracks. Moeen then goes for a big swipe outside off stump and just about avoids edging through to the keeper. A single brings Roland-Jones on strike, and he gets to double figures with a glorious pull shot off the back foot for four! That was short, getting up into Roland-Jones arc, and he thrashed it obligingly away.

Jonny Bairstow hit a boundary after the resumption, but he fell to the very next ball from to the excellent Duanne Olivier.

Ooft, Maharaj gets one to bite up and lift at Moeen, and the leftie takes a step back in surprise and helps the ball away for a single. Toby Roland-Jones takes time settling himself before he prods successive deliveries away from his pad.

  7. Eng 165-7published at 55 overs

    Olivier 11-5-33-3

Olivier will continue, after a brief consultation with Morne Morkel, while Faf directs traffic from the slips. Toby Roland-Jones gets himself off the mark with a cover drive that beats the field and goes racing away for four. Olivier responds with a delivery that angles in to the batsman and strikes him on the pad, but the umpire's having none of that appeal. It look as though it was sliding well down leg, judging by the replay, and Roland-Jones responds by clipping the ball off his hips for another easy couple of runs.

Moeen dropped on 15published at 54 overs

    Eng 159-7

Oh, Dean Elgar's dropped him! He's hovering at slip as Moeen pushes forward, Maharaj finds the edge - and the ball goes low to Elgar, who gets his hands under it, and then somehow manages to flick it out of his hands and onto the floor! Dearie me. Maharaj looks thrilled at that effort.

  10. Eng 159-7published at 53.3 overs

The new man is Toby Roland-Jones, and he's got one of the best views in the house as Moeen comes skipping down the pitch and launches the ball over the top. The ball plugs in the field, though, and that's two, before a gorgeous back foot drive from the same man brings about a four. Moeen is such a beautiful player. He was back to that and just timed the absolute pants of it. Lovely, lovely stuff.

The game is moving fast. In this light, I wouldn't be against getting to 300 ahead and putting South Africa in. Let's have a do at them tonight.

    Bairstow c Rabada b Olivier 10 (Eng 153-7)

That's some excellent all-round cricket from South Africa. Bairstow had just tonked Duanne Olivier for four and Olivier responded with a short ball that Bairstow couldn't resist taking on. He didn't get underneath it and Kagiso Rabada, out in the deep, had a real problem picking up the dark red ball against a gloomy sky. It's excellent judgement from Rabada to run in, steady himself and take the catch at chest height.

James Bravant: I'm glad we've got the tail-enders out of the way so we can watch some proper batting.

    Maharaj 20-5-49-1

Keshav Maharaj whirls his arms around and gives the ball a bit of air and Moeen drives the ball wristily up towards Hashim Amla. Moeen stretches forward, trying to protect himself from the ominous rough marks that are right under his nose, and he plays across his pad. There's a half-shout from Maharaj as he gets hit high on the pad, Moeen opting to leave the ball and getting completely deceived by a delivery that turns sharply, but that was probably going over the top.

As soon as the lights came on, the ball started talking. Batting is not going to be easy in England under the floodlights for the day-night Test against the West Indies.

Duanne Olivier, who bowled an excellent pre-tea spell, will get things going again. Moeen just about avoids edging his first delivery behind, unable to resist a little tickle at a delivery outside off stump, before Bairstow gets off the mark with a handsome cover drive for four. The lights have really kicked in now.

Here's a bit of Root stattage for you, courtesy of the bods at Investec, as Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali make their way down the stairs under an increasingly-gloomy Manchester sky.

"Root knew that hitting down the ground would bring unnecessary risks so opted instead to drop and run and get the bulk of his runs behind square, with cut shots to the bad balls. By the time he was dismissed for 49, Root still had not scored any shots in the 'V' down the ground."

Some sad news to bring you... Essex have announced the passing of Doug Insole at the age of 91.

The former England and Essex batsman was also a selector for the national team and president of the MCC.

He was chair of the Test and County Cricket Board (now known as the England and Wales Cricket Board) at the time of the Kerry Packer-led World Series Cricket and was awarded the CBE.

Insole played nine Tests for England and scored one century. He made 450 first-class appearances, becoming known as ‘Mr Essex’, and the county named their pavilion after him earlier this year.
