Stokes has joined the party. Reverse-sweep for four before advancing down the wicket and hoicking one for another boundary. Nine off the over, a good one for England. This partnership now worth 57.

I can give you an update, the walrus mask has made its way onto the head of a cameraman. That's the loudest cheer I've heard all day.

Meanwhile, Morkel decides to double up by putting on a second jumper.

The entertainment in party stand seems to be coming from a walrus mask. It's thrown around, whoever catches it, wears it, and gets a song. "He's got a walrus on his head." Someone accidentally threw it down the stairs and out of the stand. I fear for their safety.

Ben Stokes, inked up on his right arm, takes his guard, has a good look around and prepares to face Morne Morkel. The England batsman is tucked up by a tight line, Morkel goes a bit wider and Stokes nearly plays on.

Stokes shuffles forward and clips off his pads for a delightful four to end the over.

It's starting to look dark at Old Trafford.

Re: Max and furthest travelled for a day's cricket. How does 10,473 miles stand up? My wife and twin boys (8) left Cambridge on Christmas Eve 2006, spent Christmas Day in the air and arrived in Melbourne, via Hong Kong, for the first over of the Boxing Day Test. Saw Shane Warne take his 700th wicket. Misery.

I hope you're wrong, Steve. But I don't think you are, I just had a look at a rain radar and there seems to be a large shower on its way.

Well wide down the leg side from Maharaj, there's no turn and Root gets the bottom end of his bat on it for another boundary. He is scoring freely down that leg side.

The England captain is just two away from his 50.

    Root 44, Stokes 5

Oh hello, the crowd have livened up, lots of singing and chanting in the party stand. They were on form yesterday on fancy dress Saturday, it's been slightly more subdued today.

Root whips off his pads, chased down by Bavuma who is running across from deep square leg as England run through two.

Morkel drifts down leg, it's full and it's four as Root just steers it down to fine leg. England's lead now up to 247.

It's perplexing that no one seems to realise the issue is lack of aggression in the opening batting. Cook gets out when he has to move the score board along, yet we seem to keep trying very defensive partners with him, we just need a bit of oomph a la Trescothick and Strauss to allow Cook to play his regular game. Scoreboard pressure is the easiest way to force a wicket so why depend entirely on our middle order to do the scoring at a fast rate?

The players just had a drinks break, South Africa huddled together, keeping warm I imagine.

Here's something interesting, replays show that Stokes may have edged one from Morkel in that last over. There was no sound, South Africa didn't appeal. But UltraEdge shows a spike. Technology, eh?

Root momentarily becomes a left-hander to Maharaj, looking to strike the ball through the covers but it bounces up and over batsman and keeper. That looked sloppy. More bounce from the spinner, this time it outdoes everyone and goes through for four byes.

Can confirm it's cold at Old Trafford. Jumper-and-jacket weather. The prize winners in the beds are all under the duvet, while those clutching cold lager do so with shaky hands. The flags are standing to attention, but the clouds stay away. For now.

    Root 38, Stokes 5

Morkel to Stokes, the England batsman gets his head over the ball and drives to mid-off for a single. Root plays another fine cut shot, this time chopping the ball towards the man in the deep for one. It's a no-ball from the seamer which brings up the 100 for the hosts, free-hit? Wrong format I'm afraid.

Umpire Kumar Dharmasena has a polite word with Morkel, telling him to be careful with his follow through down the middle of the wicket.

I reminded you of Jennings' dismissal, so it's only fair I also show you how Malan lost his wicket ...

Maharaj bowls round the wicket to the right-handed Root, who is happy to pad away the first few or so deliveries, before getting down and drilling the ball to the boundary with a tremendous sweep. He had his eye on that as soon as the ball left Maharaj's hand.

A change in the bowling as the dangerous, tall figure of Morne Morkel returns. He's bowled brilliantly in this Test and has been rewarded today with two wickets.

There's an appeal for a leg-before as the ball clips the pad and runs down fine. Going down leg, no doubt about it.

Five from the over, some decent running between the wicket between Root and Stokes. They seem to have a good understanding.

Here's another chance to see that Jennings dismissal ...

I'm not sure what to make of Maharaj's pointy sideburns, as Root easily nullifies his turn by batting on the back foot. Another one keeps low but this time Root is wise to it, playing a low late cut for two.

Another single with a push to point ends the over. England will just want to keep the scoreboard ticking along, build up the lead.

In 2013 I flew over from Zurich to watch one day at Lord's and then two days at The Oval later on in the summer. The first day at The Oval was rained off and I left with England on the cusp of victory on the Sunday so I could get my flight back.

Easy single for Root who cuts to point. I say easy, it probably isn't easy at all, but Root makes it look like it is.

Stokes dabs to mid-wicket, thinks about a quick single but then wisely sends his captain back.

Faf du Plessis is looking happier than he has done for most of this Test. This is such an important period of the game.
