Maharaj has the bit between his teeth here and he's causing all kinds of problems by bowling into that rough. And this pitch is doing him a lot of favours too, as we see the unpredictable bounce come into play again. This time it keeps about an inch or so above the ground and runs through for four byes.

Stokes is off the mark with four, hitting with the spin and sweeping Maharaj past backward square leg.

  3. Eng 76-4published at 31 overs

A bouncer from Rabada which goes well over the left shoulder of Root, who looks to hook but misses completely and ends up doing a pirouette.

Much more convincing next delivery, a textbook cut to send the ball crashing to the boundary. He plays that shot so, so well.

England have the same problems that they've had for the past two years: number two, number three and number five. I'm sure most will - or they should - score runs against the West Indies.

  5. Eng 72-4published at 30 overs

Ben Stokes is the new man in and he is nearly in trouble almost straight away. Stokes opts to leave one from Maharaj and is hit on the pads. South Africa consider a review but it was missing the stumps. England under pressure here.

England are in the position where you think if someone can get a 50, or a 60, it can get them out of trouble. Stokes has that same rough to contend with, as a left-hander. He has to have a plan in his head of how to get past Maharaj.

    Malan c De Bruyn b Maharaj 6 (Eng 72-3)

We said South Africa were targeting Malan with Maharaj's spin and they've succeeded. Malan takes a couple of strides forward, the ball finds the rough, bat onto pad, into the hands of short leg. Malan gone.

We would be applauding Bavuma, had he held on. Nevertheless, another good over from Rabada goes by. He's bowling well, making the batsman play.

That was a great effort. It's the most difficult catch to take, with the ball swirling and arching away from you.

It was a tough chance but he got two hands to it! High and wide from Rabada, a wild flash by Malan who slices it up in the air. Bavuma chased it, got two hands to it but couldn't get it to stick.

    It was tough.

  12. Eng 67-3published at 28 overs

It's getting breezy out there - umpire Aleem Dar has to keep picking up the bails which are blowing off. A slip and a short leg in for Malan, who pushes one into the off side and runs through for a quick single.

Maharaj bowls a full toss, a gift with a nicely-tied bow on top, as Root sweeps for a boundary.

The lead is now 203 for England.

  13. Jadeja suspended for SL Testpublished at 13:59 British Summer Time 6 August 2017

India might have completed a series win against Sri Lanka earlier today but they'll be going into the third Test without Ravindra Jadeja.

Jadeja has been suspended by the ICC after reaching six demerit points within a 24 month period.

Jadeja was fined 50% of his match fee and given three demerit points after he threw the ball "in a dangerous manner" at batsman Dimuth Karunaratne on the third day of the Colombo Test.

He will miss the Test at Pallekele, which begins on 12 August.

    Root 15, Malan 2

We've seen invariable bounce in this match, as another one from Rabada keeps low, Malan doing well to dig it out. He then gets up on his toes and works a single off the hips.

Rabada drifts down leg and Root easily clips that down to the fine leg boundary for four. Straighter from the seamer next up, squaring up the batsman.

  16. Eng 57-3published at 26 overs

Root and Malan will need to steady the ship here now for England. A sweet bit of turn for Maharaj, with Root coming forward and playing inside the line. Prompting "oohs" and "aahs" from the fielders.

South Africa looking to target Malan with the field coming in. That's one way to counter it, getting down low and sweeping to the man at deep square leg. Promising over for Maharaj, two from it.

Keaton Jennings finishes this series with 127 runs at an average of 15.87. His career average is down to 24.50.

  18. Eng 55-3published at 25 overs

I am sure there will be plenty of Keaton Jennings talk over the course of this afternoon, but are England in a spot of trouble here? The lead is 191, as Dawid Malan makes his way to the middle. Rabada continues with a nice tight line, close to the off stump and angling away.

England are just wobbling a bit. That's not a good shot from Keaton Jennings. This innings was a big test to him and he looked to be getting into decent shape before lunch, but that was too close to cut. It was more of a flick, rather than a cut, and he'll be very disappointed.

    Jennings c Amla b Rabada 18 (Eng 55-3)

Keaton Jennings is gone and what a terrible way to depart. Rabada bowling across to the left-hander, who looks to cut something that really isn't there to be cut. It's catching practice for Hashim Amla at first slip, but it's taken smartly.
