England head coach Trevor Bayliss on captain Joe Root's first Test series: "He has done fantastically well, you don't win a Test series 3-1 against South Africa very often.

"I think he showed a few nerves before the first match, and ahead of the second match he had a look at things he was doing.

"He is a natural batsman and I think he is turning into a natural captain."

On opener Keaton Jennings being selected against the West Indies: "Whether he plays or not, he is still an option to take to Australia. He's still in the running. If he doesn't play than he has the chance to play more matches before Australia."

Joe Root still out on the pitch at Old Trafford, signing autographs and taking selfies with those that have stayed back.

What a lovely chap.

England head coach Trevor Bayliss: "What impressed me most today was the ability to win the last match of a series. The guys were really focused, knew the needed to win it and win series and we won it well.

"Anytime you lose it is a kick up the backside and it focused the guys. You can't complain about how they played in the last two Tests.

"We are lucky indeed that we have got three guys who do the all -rounders job very well. It gives us different options, with the ball especially, and it gives top line bowlers a rest."

On the performances of Moeen Ali: "I said I wanted him to be seen as a batter who could bowl a bit. The psychology worked!"

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis on Test Match Special: "Broad and Anderson are relentless and our batting line-up wasn't strong enough for them. We've always had one bowler on a day who isn't consistent.

"When Hashim and myself were batting I thought we could get to the second new ball, which would have been tough. But then anything would have been possible. But to lose Hashim and then the cluster of wickets was disappointing.

"We know we are not the finished article, we're not where we need to be. We had a lot of inexperienced batters and the experienced batters didn't perform or come to the party.

"I think England could be Ashes winners. They have a balanced team."

England need to make sure they find a number two who can go to Australia. Jennings needs space away from this environment, the pressure, the scrutiny. Go back to Durham and make some runs.

I look at this England side and for three years it's frustrated me because they're so close to be so good. They had too much talent to lose like they did at Trent Bridge.

I'd expect to see Malan get a couple of Test matches against the West Indies to show what he can do.

They will win against them quite comfortably, the big challenge will be against Australia. Have they got enough strong batsmen to cope with the Aussie seamers?

England's man of the series Moeen Ali on Test Match Special: "This series I have felt more consistent with bat and ball, especially ball. I felt good rhythm after the first game. I contributed with the bat a couple of times. In general, I'm very pleased.

"It doesn't matter what I'm labelled as, when we play one spinner, I'm the lead, if we play two then, depending on who it is, I may be second fiddle. But I have the experience in international cricket now and it's a good challenge.

"I was patient before I got my wickets today. My hat-trick at The Oval, to win the way we did, I felt was massive for my confidence. I still can't believe I have a hat-trick in international cricket."

South Africa's man of the series Morne Morkel: "I'll enjoy this champagne tonight... it was hard work.

"Personally you set some goals for the year and this was definitely one of them. I was pleased what I did with the ball. The most important thing is to keep asking questions. I've committed to hitting that fuller length and I have done that consistently.

"As soon as the ball went a bit softer it is important to get a fuller length consistently. I worked hard on that and hopefully it is something I can continue to do."

They took a lot of criticism at Trent Bridge but to respond like this and play fighting cricket, it was the key players who stuck their hands up.

England will be honest and say number two and five needs sorting out but, Joe Root in his first series in charge, to win 3-1, it's a tremendous effort.

We have seen some outstanding bowling, skill with some bat, traditional play and then modern batting. It's been good as a visual. I would have loved to have seen a close game.

I thought Root managed situation well during the Amla and Du Plessis partnership. He attacked with field settings, putting men around the back and he made Amla play a ball to the on side.

Moeen being the second spinner is nonsense. He's number one spinner. Very rarely has he failed in that fourth innings with a score on the board. He nearly always delivers some kind of consistency.

England's player of the series, nominated by South Africa coach Russell Domingo "for his consistency with ball and for being devastating with bat", is Moeen Ali.

More from Joe Root on TMS: "Moeen looks like he is improving all the time, he works hard, he's found a role that fits him. He can now go to strength to strength, he's been outstanding this series.

"We need to make sure we continue to look to improve and are not just happy where we are at. There are big challenges ahead so we need to look at ways to get better.

"The thing about Keaton Jennings is that his mentality is outstanding, he's level headed, doesn't let a situation dictate terms. He would have loved to have scored more runs, he's a fine young man and a talented player so we will see what happens."
