It has ebbed and flowed from player with a new ball, with movement and pace to when the shine has gone and batting has not looked too difficult.

It has been a magnificent cricket pitch, all four in the series have. It has made for good combat between bat and ball.

    Top stuff, Kal.

You started the afternoon session saying there was no way back for South Africa, you went through it with Amla and Du Plessis threatening a comeback, but that man Moeen Ali does it again with three quick wickets.

"We've got Ali, Moeen Ali...I just don't think you understand..."

    Moeen 16-1-54-3

So, Moeen to Maharaj. Fielders crowded round the number eight, it turns and goes past the bat, off the pad and loops up, Bairstow just quite can't his paws to it! Replays show that it may have touched the bat.

    That's the session done.

    Wow.

South Africa were looking to be in control until Moeen Ali had his say. I'll now hand you over to Shamoon Hafez for the final session of the day and, perhaps, the series.

  5. SA 179-6published at 54 overs

Faf Du Plessis is still there and, as a reminder to England, he advances down the strip and clips Toby Roland-Jones for four.

Keshav Maharaj is new man in and he has a good old flirt at a leg-cutter and nearly nicks it.

It was only 20 or so minutes ago that Amla and Du Plessis were in and we were, quietly, talking about the potential of a South Africa win.

Remember, Facebook live with Geoffrey Boycott at the tea interval. You can watch it live here, external.

Almost predictable. A clump of wickets, three in-a-row. Boy is it frustrating.

    De Bruyn c Stokes b Moeen 0

South Africa are crumbling! De Bruyne plays a terrible shot. He chops down on a ball outside off, finds the edge and it's a very neat catch by Stokes at slip.

23 wickets in the series for Moeen now. He now also has as many in his career as Phil Tufnell (121).

De Kock was itching. Just leave that shot in the locker as a left hander.

With the spin on offer, the chances of you nicking it are high.

I know he is a good offside player, but that was a bad option.

If you play any cricket, you know the spinner is trying to tempt you into that drive.

    De Kock c Cook b Moeen 1

De Kock is gone and Moeen strikes again! He tempts the new batsman with a full one and De Kock edges it into the hands of Cook.

Perhaps we may finish today after all?!

The whole of the western terrace at Old Trafford sang, "have a salad" to me for 45 minutes when I played there for South Africa once.

  11. SA 167-4published at 52 overs

Faf du Plessis had a word with the umpire after that Amla decision, questioning the spike on UltraEdge. A noise from something other than the bat must have caused it.

Du Plessis flicks a straight delivery off the pads for two. De Kock is off the mark with a similar looking shot for a single, would have been four had it not been for a decent piece of fielding from Broad.

Quinton de Kock is the new batsman in. His first delivery from Moeen finds bounce and turn. The final delivery finds a leading edge but falls safely.

Replays show the moment the England fielders saw on the big screen that it was going on to hit the stumps. High fives, fist bumps and pumps. What an important wicket.

Amla put on an show for this crowd, you can hear the applause he got after making his way off the field.

He showed great skill and there was a full array of strokes after lunch.

    A huge wicket for England.

Amla lbw Moeen 83 (Eng 163-4)

It's been given out! A great review. It's hitting leg stump full on.

Root wasn't too sure about reviewing it but Moeen persuaded the captain. There was a slight spike on UltraEdge, but there was clearly a gap between bat and ball. England get the breakthrough they needed.

Shout for lbw, Amla on strike - it looks close! Given not out, England review.

Toby Roland-Jones returns, or ToRoJo as we like to call him. I say 'we,' I mean me.

Sloppy fielding from James Anderson at mid-off gifts South Africa two when there only should have been one.

Punched hard and fast by Du Plessis and that pierces through the hands of ToRoJo and races through to the boundary.

A tame appeal for lbw from some of the England players, mainly the bowler, but umpire not interested. Clearly going down leg.

    Nine from the over.

Amla looks settled, he is positive in his game and found a way to score. I have seen that the middle session has been the best to bat. If anything has happened, it has taken place in the morning and evening sessions.

A lot is riding on these two players. If one of them can get 150 or 160, then South Africa have a chance.

South Africa need another 225 runs to win

I think it's safe to say momentum is firmly with South Africa at the moment. Amla jigs down the wicket, get's under the ball and lofts Moeen for six!

    150 up for South Africa.

South Africa scoring at some rate here.
